Well, I had alot of fun shooting this challenge, more fun than I expected. My shot was totally spontaneous as I was driving by the local track and some of the "boys" were out riding unsupervised. I took over 150 shots in about 15 or 20 minutes of action.
So, I entered a shot where the framing gave the impression that the rider had just jumped and was going to keep on going. I guess the unique framing was considered an error by some voters.
So, here are some of my outtakes. What do you think, would any of these faired better than 59th place and why?
Here is my entry:

Personally, I think your image was vastly underrated. I'd have it in top 10. That's how I voted it. I can only shake my head and laugh at the people who see the truncated head as somehow accidental; it seems to me so obvious what youw ere trying to do. IMO your entry is far and away the best photograph of the several you have shown.

I have to admit, for the most part I like heads on my subjects.. :-/
I would probably have gone for #2, but used levels to try and brighten up the subject. |

I gave your entry a 10. Funny thing is, I like your outtake #2 even better, I guess I would've given that one an 11, LOL. |

I liked your entry, but I would've gone for #2 for the fact he's in shorts, no helmut, and above all, FLIP FLOPS! |

Thanks for the comments... Yep, the unsupervised part explains why he was riding with no helmet, shorts, & flip flops:)
I honestly had a good time and gotta admit, this is one of my favorite photos of 2005. Another factor in using was that when I showed it to some friends, they refused to believe I took it. They figured I just down loaded it off the internet somewhere. I thought that was a good sign.
Thanks again for the comments... anyone else?

Not like you're the only one who has shaken their head and laughed at me. ;-)
To me, this photo appeared to be someone's "best shot" taken at a motocross event, but they inadvertently cut off the head, but still wanted to enter this shot, so they tried to compensate with a clever title. That was my impression and it's not like that isn't done at least occasionally in these challenges. But now, with the advantage of all the insight you've provided, I see that it was an intentional, artistic statement.
...but I still don't like the head cut off. ;-) |

I think the image would rock if you cropped it so just the wheels and the bottom of the chassis were in the frame. It wouldn't look like a mistake. I won't nag you about the protective gear. ;)

I liked your shot also. Curious, did the original have any more room on the right? Might have been fun to see this with more space on the right and crop the left out. I know normal convention is to have something moving appear to be moving into the frame, but in this case it could have worked to have it appear the bike was on it's way out. As it is now the mind anticipates the bikes re-entry into the picture. ???
Just my thoughts. Cool pic - keep smiling! ;^)

Hmmm, tested the other comments and agree. MORE out of the box would've been better.
