A local magazine is doing a feature on me and asked me for a self portrait for the cover. The mag runs BW and I shot these 2 images today, but am not sure which one, or if i even like either of them. Any comments welcome.
<->
I think I'm gonna shoot something else tonight. Kinda bummed on these shots. Ya know how sometimes they just don't come out like you wanted them too? That's how I'm feeling.
(and I busted an umbrella today, freakin' wind blew the lights down in my first outside location)
edit: empty space on the top of each image is for the masthead.

I'm gonna be honest and say I don't think either of them are up to the quality of other shots in your portfolio. They both seem a little too busy for a magazine cover (congratulations, by the way!).
Would it be cheating if you did something similar to the shot here, found in your portfolio? I think this would be great for a magazine cover.

Personally I like the first one because it is an interesting self portrait that obviously shows that you are a photographer. The second one is interesting as well, but it is a little dark and I don't think it is worthy of the cover of a magazine. Hope that helps :) |

that's so funny. I'm leaning towards doing that exact image for the shot. But i was kinda worried that I'm not being creative by re-doing that image.

I very much agree with puzzled on this.
Personally I didn't like any of the shots in particular.
I agree that none of them is even close in it's quality to your photographs.
If it really had to be one of those two, I would go on the "outside" photo. but to be honest? it gives me a certain deja-vu feeling. kinda... I think I have already seen that somewhere. (what comes to my mind is the mag. cinematographer. but I could be wrong)
Recreation of old stuff is maybe less fun, but comparing to your creativity, it is hard for me to come up with anything better to offer...
So I would probably go for either or

I really like the first one. It gives a sense of you being a photographer which is lacking in the other and would also be if you recreated the old image that has been suggested. I somehow doubt that the small size you are showing it here really does it justice either.

Hmmm, magazine cover takes it to a whole new level, and the editor no doubt is going to want some area that print can be read easily on. I would keep in mind what past covers look like for the mag, allowing for space that they can place print on for other article titles etc.

Eric, I guess the question is: how do you want to come across? Knowing you a little, I would make sure your light hearted sense of being comes through. These are too serious, IMHO
But that may not be best for business.
Personally, I think this is the best ;)
Seriously, or maybe not, how about something with you in a natural setting with camera smiling or having a laugh? I like your various funny studio shots and I personally think something like that would be stand-out.
Or how about: completely buried to the neck in sand, head sticking out and your camera in front of your face with a little mini tripod and maybe a hand sticking out so you can focus and shoot ;) |

Now that you've got us all (well, me for one :-) curious, please don't forget to let us know what you decided to do, Eric.
And then, when the magazine comes out, I hope you share a scan of the cover with us!

There is alot more of you in the second photo:)
#1 says "Serious Professional" to me.
#2 says "Playful and Creative" to me.
How do you want to be percieved? Is one image more appropriate for the content of the article than the other?
Congratulations on your selection for the magazine!

I agree that neither shot is really you. I think a reshoot of the girl with the infinate faces is probably your best bet. It's a graphically strong image and I think it will make the most impact on a cover.
Can't wait to see the end result!

Neither. The second one shows your creativity, however I believe it is too busy to be a cover. |

I would go for the first shot. I also find it slightly ironic that people are suggesting neither are suitable..
