I'm transferring all my photos in my hard drive to an external LaCie 500GB drive. I got an error message on 2 partitions of my HD (not the Lacie) which is "cyclic redundancy check". The files seem to be there but unaccessible. How do I recover these files? I tried using ms-dos commands but didn't work. Any other way to recover these? How about a data recovery software? What would you recommend? In case of successful recovery would I still be able to use these partitions after reformatting?
TIA

Firewire or USB? It is not necessarily you hard disks, Files might be corrput in the transfer from the LaCie to the hard disks...I'm still looking for a more clear thread...
BTW: Have you run chkdsk /f on the LaCie yet?

USB 2.0.. I'm actually transferring from hd to LaCie. It could just be certain files within a folder but I couldn't access the entire folder. When clicked, the computer hangs for a long time and eventually pops up a CRC error.

Ah, Maybe run chkdsk on your HD's...
You can open and view photos that are on your HD?
When are you getting the CRC error message? During the copy process or when trying to open files that have been copied to the External Disk?
CRC errors are not really a good thing...generally means file corruption...

Good point on chkdsk, I've haven't done that and will try it. The CRC errors pop up when trying to access the folders in this partition. There are to folders there. On the one folder (called Prints), I can copy but at some point it stops and I get the CRC error so it's during the copy process for that folder. The other folder (called Canon10D) is not accessible at all.
I have one CD that has this problem too. During the copy process, it tells me there is a CRC error and gives out the filename that's corrupted so it's easy to bypass the bad file and do the rest. With my HD there's no telling which file is corrupted.
I'm hoping it's just a corrupt file and not a toast HD.
