This was a shot I took around this time last year...

"The Chimney"

I like it! I especially like to see that the TV antenna is still in place. Just had a thought, stoke up a good fire in each fireplace and take a night shot!

Very cool, as it is the subject is too centered for my liking. I might have have composed this with the chimney in the left third of the frame. A crop might have been tough to pull off here as well as you would end up with a long skinny picture if you were to include the entire chimney. Still a nice shot.

Thanks....

I am always worried that if my target is NOT centered it will come out off-focus slightly.

As for the fires and night shot, I don't think the Californian Forestry Department would find that such a keen idea after having lost miles of land in the forest fires the year before.

I can't speak directly for the E-20N, but most cameras allow you to "lock" focus by holding the shutter release button half-way down, such that you can focus and then move to a better composition (while holding the button down) before pressing the button the rest of the way to release the shutter.

Plus, the that chimney structure may not be anywhere near as structurally sound as it was prior to the house destroying fire. The intense heat, potential rapid cooling from fire hoses... Not always a good combination for structural soundness.

I don't think they actually used any fire houses....

The whole area was evacuated and essentially burned to the ground (we're talking miles in every direction).

There were dozens upon dozens of houses burned to the ground. Foundation slabs and chimneys and a pile burnt rusted metal (from bed springs to cars, to the charred remains of tubs, etc)...just rubbish.

Strangely, there was one house left in tact with this older couple sitting on their porch....what a strange feeling that must have been. Being the only house left for miles around. All your neighbors gone.
