Just rolled over 10,000 photos yesterday, and today, taking 10,018 the shutter made an unusual noise. Err 99 flashed on the back, I turned it off and tried again. Same noise, Err 99 again. I called tech support and they want me to send it to California!

Before I send it off, I'm gonna take a look at it myself, of course. I took off the lens, and fired a shot. I think one curtain moved, but the other didn't, hard to tell. I tried slowing down the shutter speed, but it goes fast anyways.

Any advice? Is there a way to manually open both curtains? I don't like the idea of messing with my camera's insides....

a 1sec exposure should open it for a second ...
if it doesn't -- well you know ...

Tried it. Didn't do anything different than a fast exposure.

The 300D can (should) be able to lock the shutter open for sensor cleaning.

I had an almost identical thing happen to my 300D after around 11,500 shots. Sure enough I sent it to Canon and had the shutter replaced.

That's what I'll do if someone doesn't tell me otherwise.

My 300D, from new took 50 shots and the shutter and mirror fell apart. Luckily Jessops, the company I bought the camera from, replaced it for a new one.

Had no error message, but I could see the mirror assembly hanging in front of the eye piece.

Wow, that's strange. Anyone know what the shutter is supposed to be guaranteed to?

for the 300D there is no garantee, but the aprox is 10-15k, the 20D is 50-100k, the 1Ds is 200k
