Just rolled over 10,000 photos yesterday, and today, taking 10,018 the shutter made an unusual noise. Err 99 flashed on the back, I turned it off and tried again. Same noise, Err 99 again. I called tech support and they want me to send it to California!
Before I send it off, I'm gonna take a look at it myself, of course. I took off the lens, and fired a shot. I think one curtain moved, but the other didn't, hard to tell. I tried slowing down the shutter speed, but it goes fast anyways.
Any advice? Is there a way to manually open both curtains? I don't like the idea of messing with my camera's insides.... |

a 1sec exposure should open it for a second ...
if it doesn't -- well you know ... |

Tried it. Didn't do anything different than a fast exposure.

The 300D can (should) be able to lock the shutter open for sensor cleaning.
I had an almost identical thing happen to my 300D after around 11,500 shots. Sure enough I sent it to Canon and had the shutter replaced.

That's what I'll do if someone doesn't tell me otherwise. |

My 300D, from new took 50 shots and the shutter and mirror fell apart. Luckily Jessops, the company I bought the camera from, replaced it for a new one.
Had no error message, but I could see the mirror assembly hanging in front of the eye piece.

Wow, that's strange. Anyone know what the shutter is supposed to be guaranteed to? |

for the 300D there is no garantee, but the aprox is 10-15k, the 20D is 50-100k, the 1Ds is 200k |
