It looks like there are 3 remotes that will work with this camera...
RS-60E3
RC-1 (wireless)
RC-5 (wireless)
Does anybody have any experience with any of these? Which one do you prefer? Are there any problems with any of these? Don't the wireless ones need something that fits your hotshoe or something? |

I have the RC-1 and it works great.
The RC-5 is a bit cumbersome.
The RS-60ES a cable release.
The wireless remote works with a sensor on the front of the camber. |

I have the RS-60E3 and I am quite happy with it.
It requires no batteries, which is a major plus since it would be just my luck that I would go without using the remote for a year, then have sudden need of it and have it be out of juice...
This is the major reason why I prefer it. |

I have the RC-1 and I it's great.
- you can attach it to your camera strap
- it has a 2sec and instant shutter release
But as pointed out the sensor is on the front of the camera so the remote needs to be pointed at the front (that applies to both RC-1 & RC-5) ...

I have the RC5 and have used it for some self-portrait shots as well as for some tripod long shutter shots. The range is stated as 16 feet and I think I got about that but it felt shorter then 16 feet. But it does work and 2 seconds is just the right amount of time I feel, as compared to the 10 second on camera timer and 10 seconds can feel like a long time to wait if you just want to elevate camera shake. I̢۪m still thinking about buying the RS-60 E3 however I̢۪m also reading that there seems to be a lot of complaints of the 2-foot length feeling restricted and short.

I read in another thread that the 2 foot length can easily be extended with a standard headphone extension cable. Can anyone here confirm that, as it would help me in my decision too. |

I have the RC-1, it is useful when doing group shots with you included in the shot.
Also have the RS-60E3, great for those long exposures as you can lock the shutter open as long as you like, also good with long lens on tripod. Only complaint is the short cable, but have a 5m extension cable coming tomorrow, so that problem will be solved.

Well, got the 5m extension cable this morning and can confirm that a headphone cable will work.
However, before going out to order one, bear in mind that most standard headphone cables use 3.5mm mini jack.
The Canon RS-60E3 uses a 2.5mm mini jack! However, I am trying to sort out some sort of deal with the company who supplied mine for a special cable that is made for the use of remote extensions for cameras.
Will keep anyone who is interested posted on progress. |

That be me, I would appreciate any info on a cheaper option to extend the cable of the RS-60E3. Thanks

Well, other than the same advantages as a cable release, a wireless remote will allow you to get in the shot and trigger the shutter when you are ready, as opposed to having to race the 10 sec timer most cameras have. Plus, you can get farther away from the camera than 2 feet.
edited for spelling

I'll ask again. Can a headphone cable be used to extend the cable length? |

Look thru the post...I have stated quite clearly that it can...providing it is 2.5mm jack and not 3.5mm jack. |

Each type of remote has its uses.
The IR remote RC-1 means you can include yourself in a photo without using self timer and trigger from in front of the camera when you are ready.
The remote RS-60E3 is a cabled release and is used when you have a long lens on the camera and are using a tripod. It triggers the shutter without causing any shake...even when you put your camera on a tripod and using the camera shutter release you will cause some vibration. Also, the cable allows you to be away from the camera when you trigger the shutter. When taking wildlife photos you can set the camera up and move away into cover and use the cable release to fire the shutter.

Man I must be as blind as a bat. Sorry, missed it. Thanks for the reply. That makes the cable option more interesting, as I have a couple of 5m extension cables laying around. |

They should work okay, but most headphone cables are 3.5mm mini jack...RS-60E3 uses 2.5mm mini jack. You can buy the jacks from electronics suppliers...just need the cable and a soldering iron. Or, cut and twist cable and use insulating tape as a temporary measure.
