Looks to me like this image was scanned from a photo. I really hope NOT, if it was a challenge entry, but that's a common scanner artifact, from my experience.????

One more thought on compression - i often think people get overly concerned about it...

finished 18 in Accidental Letters.
Guess the file size? 29k!
A few K here or there matters not.
