Hello everybody I really love macroshots and I would love to have tips about make my shot better without spending hundreds € for a ring flash or a MPE65...
so here is my shot

//www.photo4u.it/files/_mg_1628_169.jpg

what I am not happy with are details... this shot was taken with a 20D a 100mm macro, 3 ET and a 2X multiplier on a tripod of course at iso400 1/3 f11 and 2 table lamps for the set lighting... here comes my mad-lens set up
//www.photo4u.it/files/macrofolies_160.jpg
I still tried with inverted 50mm mkI, the quality is not that better but the distance from the subject is halved, so I'd prefer to give to the "alive" subject a bit more privacy... (well you know flies used to fly when you come too close)

any tips will be welcome!

PLEASE...DO NOT POST large photos in the forums, post a thumbnail or a link to the large photos. Many here have dial up connections. Thank you again.

so you've spent all that money on lenses but can't buy a macro light?

Would you let me know 2 things.
1) distance you got between lens and the fly with this setup
2) how much did you rop the image.

Thank´s

mmm ok maybe I was a bit confusing to you... (for sure is my poor english...)
-totaldis: I use the 100mm macro for a lot of shot without any problem, and the ET and the 2X costs to me less than the you can think... and as above I use them without any problem for other purposes

-ramevi: 1- nomore than 5cm with the inverted 50mm instead I have 1-2cm!!! 2- no cropping here

-ericlimon: the only glass here are on 100mm (I HAVE to use those lenses) and on the 2X, the ET's have no glass... have nothing inside!!!

You have no details because your depth of field is too low. It's probably like 1/32 of an inch!!!

mmm I think you are absolutely right... I just thought f11 was enough... but with the 2X the dof is halved.. so nor the eyes where totally in focus...

if you are relly in to macro work, then get the MP-E65 and the ringlite flash, the quality of your images will improve a lot.

I have the MP-E65 and the ringlite in my shoppingcart at BH, just waiting for my visa to clear :)

Ring flashes for cheap? Try this:

//www.dennisonbertram.com/hackmaster/2005/02/build-your-own-ring-flash.htm

That's from a link in one of the 'tips and tricks' forum posts.

well nova really a useful link... I would try if only I would have a flash :D So know the question is: Is it better a ring flash to use as portrait flash too.. or a normal flash to use as macro helper??

anyway you have been really nice answering ;)

1) about 2cm from the end of the lens... it's not the real lens... the 100mm has a lens inside itself...

2) this is about the 80% of the real shot.. so a normal crop I think
