Hi,

On my ramble to find interesting abandoned buildings I found this old store-room/changing room. I am not happy with the framing of the original or the crop. Anyone got any advice?

Thanks,
Paula

(Note: My entry is very different from this shot.)

Hey Paula,

I like both shots actually,
My advice on the crop would be to stick with a common aspect ratio as much as possible. On your cropped version you are at an odd size for printing and framing. (640x584) It can still be printed and framed, but the cost can be much higher. You might open it up to a 640 x 640 square if you like that crop. A square is also custom, by-the-way, but much easier to find mattings and frames for.

Thanks Gringo!

Do you think that chopping off the stair and bottom of the rail is acceptable?

Hmmm, I think I would give it a full "Three" stairs if you can. 3's and 5's seem to work better for most people. Don't be afraid to clone out the bar on the bottom.

cool, ties in with fibonnaci numbers!

I think I'll try the cloning idea. Thank you.

I like the photo and you've gotten good feedback on cropping, etc...however, I don't think a photo of this nature will do very well in the 'Abandoned Buildings' challenge. It doesn't look very "abandoned". Just a thought. Keep smiling! ;^)

we suould never be without our fibonnaci numbers! (I think).

Can I chop one up as an example and post it here Paula?

The purists might not care for this version.
(I changed aspect ratios, altered distortion and cloned the bar out)

for all those who fall as short as I do on my "Fibonacci Numbers" this should help you get up to speed;

Had a bit of an editing frenzy!....

#1 has cloning to remove the whole lower rail, some wall spots, and a small man. crop as suggested.

#2 has some v amateur dodge and burn on the sky, suggested 3-step crop, and a border. messed with sat and did a 70% sharpen, too.

I think the square crop works well

Ugh! You need the rail!

Hahahah! It acts as the leadline to pull the viewer to the center.

Ok! #1 is going backwards!

I'm happy with #2 thou.

Do you like the "Black" border?

The white border looks better. My black border is prob'ly too wide as well.

Do you think a shot with a border can influence the psychology of the voter? I think it might have a subconscious effect.

Isn't this a "Basic Editing" challenge? If so, no cloning, dodging, burning.

I know "I" vote on everything the artist includes in the entry.
If I like the border, good. But if I don't it could drop the score. The same goes for the title. I would not have a border if I wasn't sure about it.

I'm not entering this shot. I just wanted some advice about the framing/cropping of this pic. (Thanks gringo!)

I judge on every aspect of the image, meeting challenge, technical aspects, wow factor. I try to be consistent and fair in my voting style.

Sometimes when I see a great shot that has a border it seems as if the photographer knows it's great, and is ready to post it for prints!
On the other hand, there are shots that have dodgy borders that take away from the overall quality.

Twas my pleasure. I like the shot. But I think you should keep the border on the ...Light and airy side. You don't want the border to over-power the picture.

I hope my opinions gave you some ideas to work with.

Have a great day Paula!

(And good luck in the abandoned challenge. I don't think I have a chance against some of the buildings you have to shoot there in Ireland).

I think I'll leave the borders til my stuff improves a bit!

You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find an abandoned building- the housing market has every loon with a shed converting it into a "muse" or apartment!

Thanks again!

Hi, that's a very nice shot! My quick take on cropping would be to center the interest a bit--it seemed a bit "right-heavy" to me. I ended up cropping-out the neat little curly thing on the end of the hand-rail, which is a shame; but it leaves an image with mostly straight lines which I personally like. (I put my version at
//jbpc.ucsd.edu/~jbordner/165784-crop.jpg . Sorry, I'm a newbie here and haven't figured out how to post thumb-nailed pictures yet. :-} )

James,

I like your version of the crop. It adds more balance.

Thanks!
