What's Half-life 2? |
I'm tempted to whip out my gravity gun and throw some of that furniture around! |

I'm in agony over this challenge. I went to an awesome place to shoot but spent more time exploring then shooting *grin* I'd love to go back and do some retakes, but unfortunately I just don't have the time. So working with the pictures I did take - I just can't decide which one to use. Argh!! Every picture I have that I like I can see flaws in and then ignoring the flaws, I like too many of them to choose. This is painful.
End of the day, I'm definitely going back to reshoot after the challenge. I had too much fun not to. |

I knew this would eventually be a challenge topic theme, so I always kept a lookout for abandoned places (and there are so many hereabouts). I chose one and decided not to go to any others to reduce the difficult decision-making process (though I did take some pics of an ruined house when I went out photographing early on Sunday morning, but it just happened to be there).
Anyway, you can see Woody in the place at my buzznet PaD.

Thought I would post these sites for people, I found these photographers when I was thumbing through the nocturnes website (Cool photo organization in mostly western US). These photos are pretty much impossible to shoot digitally (5-35 min. exposures) but they just fascinate me and have become my new obsession. I just hope this full moon is clear because the last 2 cycles have been cloudy.

Well, until I looked at some of Guuti's images, I thought I had submitted a pretty good "Abandoned Building" shot. If the competition is anything like that, I'm throwin' my hat in right now. Those are great shots. I'm blown away by that work. Thank you so much for sharing! |

its funny, i went on 2 mini road trips to get shots, as there are many good abandoned sites around where i live. however, i ended up using the first shot i took, which may do well here, who knows?

Oddly enough, of all the shots I took, my first was the one I used as well.

Although places are abandoned it doesnt mean the building or the land it is on isnt owned by someone. Breaking into property or trespassing on land is illegal. I dont think DPC meant for people to break the law in order to submit an image to the challenge. I also dont think 'shooting for an online photography challenge' would be a good enough excuse to tell the judge either. |
A building can be abandoned on public land or by an unassumed owner should the owner have passed away for example. Not all abandoned buildings are illegal to enter.

Generally if a building is abandoned and on public land, it is going to be posted 'No Trespassing' because of liability issues...someone could get hurt, etc.
If the building is not on public land then somebody owns it, period. The prior owner may be deceased but most likely it has been either passed to next of kin, or sold to someone else. Private property shouldn't be accessed without permission - posted or not.
Hopefully you can get close enough to get some decent photos, or get permission to enter if you want interior photos...
Just my opinion.

Has anyone else had a surprise encounter with a homeless person while shooting for Abandoned Buildings? We were both quite surprised but no problem once I explained that I didn't want to photograph people.
