The 80-200 is the earlier version of the 70-200. It is supposed to be a stellar lens.

Not better, but equivalent optically would be accurate. Of course it's 10mm longer at the short end, which limits it a very little bit. It also is probably slower to focus than the 70-200; I do not believe 80-200/2.8L had USM.
There are also a couple of slower versions of the 80-200 that are nowhere near as good.

Just a descriptive term, meaning "excellent."

The 80-200L is slightly sharper than the new 70-200L 2.8 but I doubt you'd ever really notice outside of testing. It's lower focusing, can't use canon teleconverters and I heard it's metering isn't quite as good. However it's about $200 cheaper if you find a good priced one. Also it's a black lens. You might look up Magic Drainpipe if you want more information on the lens. Oh I spent $730 shipped. If you're interested in one there's another one for about the same price that I got an offer for also today. The only reason I didn't take it was because this seller had more sales and buys on FM. |

Well certainly the 200mm 1.8 is the sharpest lens canon has produced. Then comes the 135L or the 85L. Pretty much the primes will beat the pants off most of these zooms. However, stopped down you almost won't notice a difference. |

wowie, i would consider than an impossible find!!! But i thought that about the 200 1.8 that went for $1000us as well. The price of the 80-200 seems to be very inflated for the most part. Yesterday i saw one on ebay sell with no ring, hood, or case, plus it had scratches on the glass for $690us. Consider yourself the bargain master ;-)

I stumbled across it at the Western Canadian News Photographer's Association forum...that's the best part, it's here in Canada so I didn't have to pay the 15% tax on top that I would normally pay on an 'import' item!
