How great is the potential for disaster when buying online?

It seems like there are maybe three or four top companies and after that it's a bit of a crap shoot, just to save a few bucks. Is that accurate?

Also how much of a hassle is it to get things fixed through the mail? Or are there local repair places in most cities?

There are probably dozens of honest outfits selling camera gear online. But you have to be careful. Websites that have brick & mortar stores are a better bet than ones that are online exclusively. Beware of sellers that do not offer the Postal Service as an alternative for shipping you purchase, they may be trying to avoid a charge of mail fraud. And beware of anyone who insists on speaking with you over the phone before they will ship your order, they want to pitch high proced accessories to you.

I had a bad experience with BeachCamera.com, I think they are run by the same people that run BuyDig, and several other online-sales-only websites. BeachCamera.com is not the same outfit as the store(s) in New Jersey that go by Beach Camera.

Given that you currently own Canon lenses I would lean in that direction. The 300D 350D and 20D will all take great looking photos. There is probably not enough difference between the 20D and the 350D do make it worth it to you, if you have the money go for the 20D but if money is at all tight donĂ¢€™t sweat it.

To me it seems like there are enough improvements between the 300 and 350D to make the 350D worth the extra cost.

Do keep in mind that whatever you buy today will be more or less obsolete in two years, so make sure this is something that you are going to get your moneys worth over the next two to three years. The longest I have managed to go without upgrading to a new camera was three years, and that was a struggle.

It sounds like B&H is the best regardless of price?

Fast delivery and no junk?

I highly recommend B&H. They are closed from April 22nd to May 1st for Passover or some other holiday. So keep that in mind.

Go with B&H for sure. Got all my kit from them. I was worried on some details, but it turns out i was totally paranoid. Great and fast as hell with service.

Cheers,

Buying online SUCKS. Don't do it. If you end up getting a damaged product, be prepared to sit on the phone and have people talk to you like you're a moron for a half an hour until you become fed up and ask for a manager to fix the problem. Then have them tell you the manager doesn't need to intervene because they're not totally sure the product is defective.

Screw that...much easier to just go to the store, buy what you need, pay a little extra...and know that if something breaks, you can go there face to face and deal with the problem.
