I was fairly amazed to see 2 snakes made the top 20 in "Pets", and this prompted me to do a quick breakdown. Of the top 20:

11 were dogs, including the top 5
4 were cats
2 were snakes
2 were "parrots" (or parrot-like birds)
1 was a horse.

There was another snake and a lizard in the top 25, incidentally. I'm not sure what this tells us, but...

A. Dog owners, generally, are better photographers than cat owners
or
B. Voters preferred dogs, and therefore "s*cks to be you" applies to people who don't own dogs

How about another challenge: "Your favorite CAT portrait"?

The dog/cat breakdown doesn't surprise me; dogs are 'cuter" than cats, and also more cooperative, whuch helps in getting portraits. What surprises me is that REPTILES made such a good showing in the top 25...

Mostly, I guess, I'm pleased with the voters; I mean, there's NOTHING cute about a reptile, so they must've been voting on the photography alone, right? Please say I'm right. The alternative is that DPC has a significant subculture of snake worshippers...

And of the bottom 7, none were live animals - meaning that people very definitely wanted a literal interpretation of "pet"!

I reckon snakes capitalized on the "cool" factor. Additionally, I think we should make space for the idea that "cute" just like "beauty" is in the eyes of the beholder. I do like the thought about DPC's subculture of snake worshippers...makes the community feels cooler altogether.

Well taken lizard shots have often done well here. There's a cool factor for sure, and you try to get a dog to crawl through a skull! : )

Good to see dogs completely annihilating the competition in this one though :P
