I noticed the Workshop folder in our portfolio section when I first became a member, but never used it. I wasn't sure what it was. Later I figured out that you can't see it if you are not logged in and viewing your own portfolio.

Today, I uploaded some photos that I didn't want viewed by anyone yet, but wanted them online to place in a folder tomorrow at work. As I uploaded them, I completed all the info about the photo including the galleries it would be under. I looked at my portfolio as a viewer other than myself would see it, and they weren't there. But I looked them up in the galleries section (while logged out) and there they were!

So here is my question...
If I don't submit category information, will the photos not be viwable in the Workshop section?

Probably, yes.

If you don't submit category information, your photos will still be viewable to you in your workshop folder.

Sorry what I meant was:
If I don't submit category information, will my photos be viewable to anyone else if they are in my workshop folder.

Your workshop folder is ONLY for you, no one else can see it no matter what do or don't fill out.
However, you CAN link to a photo in your workshop (e.g. via thumbnail in a forum thread).
I sure hope I got that right.....

I thought that was true, but after I put the photos in the Workshop folder, I logged out and did a search for them by selecting >Photos >Galleries and selecting a category that I labeled them and there they were for anyone to see.

by placing it into a gallery, people will be able to link to your photo through that gallery. also if you place a link to a photo in your workshop, it will be accessible through the link. so if you dont want anyone to see it, just dont put it in a gallery

In a nutshell, if you use the workshop and do NOT specify any galleries for the image to appear in on DPC, then the image can only be accessed by you, by anyone who has your password to access your portfolio, and by anyone to whom you post a link to that particular image.

Also, workshop images don't show up as "recent additions", which is the main reason I use the workshop; I do a lot of reworkings of others' work, and don't want it pushing my own work off my profile page. I post the thumbnail link in the thread in which I'm working, and anyone can view the image through that link but it doesn't give them access to any OTHER images in my workshop.

Workshop is also where I store potential challenge entries, so I can view them in DPC-format before submitting them, and several of them side-by-side if I'm having a hard time making up my mind. They always look a little different when posted up than they do in PS.

Robt.

Thank you Robert and Piotr, that's exactly what I wanted to know.
