Use this forum to address any questions or concerns about the Critique for Critique Only Forum. Also if you have a question check here to see if it has already been asked. Do NOT post pictures here. Let’s have fun and share critiques.

Nice game, but I have a few concerns about the rules you have set in place -- concerns that are in no way intended to diminish the fun.

First, you are using the terms 'forum' and 'thread' interchangeable, this is confusing. A post is a single message, a thread a collection of posts and a forum a collection of threads. This is mentioned only because this game consists of a single thread; referring to it as a forum is confusing. On first reading it sounded very much like you were taking it upon yourself to redefine the purpose of the IPD forum.

Originally posted by SDW65:

1. You must critique a photograph to post a photograph for critique in this forum. The only exception is the first photograph in the forum. Got to start somewhere. It was picked randomly.

There is no reason for the special rule for the first photo submitted for a critique. You could have critiqued it and then posted it for further critique. As it stands you have not critiqued it at all -- shame on you. :p

4. Do not critique in the forum. Post your comment with the picture so the photographer can check if they felt it was helpful. If the photograph is from a registered users and you cannot post critique with the picture because they don’t have a portfolio then PM them a critique. This allows registered users the opportunity to participate.

Two concerns for this one:
T: In a game played in a forum thread, the game will continue only as long as the thread stays on page one. That is, without continual bumping, the thread will fall off and die out. The posting of images for critique will bump the thread, but posting comments will not as they are not to be posted to the thread.
A: The game is being taken off of the playing field, to continue the analogy. That is, the images are posted here, but there is no indication that any critiques have been made -- even when looking at the image page there is no indication the comment was made bacause of this game. Furthermore, in the case of non-members the game is being taken off-site, with the distinct likelihood others will never be able to see the critique.

Thanks Britannica for posting. I posted the two “thread” [Sorry about the confusion] because I have seen a post or two asking for critique/comment. I in no way was trying to take anything upon myself but in return set up a “thread” for people to post there photograph for comment/critique and in return give a comment/critique. The reason I said post the comment with the picture it would keep the forum easy to view pictures and post pictures. If you feel this is not a good idea that’s your opinion and others may feel the same way. The reason I have not critiqued the photo is because once I posted this I went out taking pictures and just got home. As far as dropping off the recent threads page you can mark it as a watch thread and go to forums and click on watched threads. But I guess all this is mute because it has been all day and no one critiqued or posted. So I guess what I though would be a good idea to get photographs critiqued was not such a good idea. So I will just keep my ideas to myself from now on or offer it up for discussion before hand.

Don't get discouraged too quickly -- it is Sunday night with the last minute submission rush in full swing for many. The idea is sound, and is very similar (although not as formal) to the proposed CC restructuring. It is a good idea that may yet take off.

You are right as well that threads can be watched, I have never used the feature so I did not think of it. They can also be placed in a browsers favorites (the method I use to keep track of threads) or placed as a sticky -- two additional solutions to that potential problem that I thought of after the fact.

No, the main concern is that the flow of critiques is in one direction only -- but that is a common problem with the comments/critiques here. Once a comment/critique is given there is little chance of it developing into any form of a dialog between critic and photographer, or just as useful between two or more critics.

Maybe I'm wanting more out of the critiquing process than is offered, but after seeing all the threads about comments/critiques not being acknoledged/appreciated and conversely seeing the threads in the IPD forum that sparked enough interest for a discussion to begin -- I see more good in the dialog than tossing a comment onto an image and hoping the photographer will notice it. Just ask yourself if Jeff is even aware his photograph has been submitted for discussion, and I think you'll see immediately how hard it is to keep track of comment/critiques given and received.

Again, this was not intended to lower your enthusiasm, just food for thought to hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls the current systems suffer from.

David,
Thank you for pointing out somethings and offering your advice and concerns. I think your view are valid and the thread will be here if people want to use it. I think you know I was trying to help but I believe I went about it the wrong way. I should of started a thread and discussed this with everyone before jumping head first. I have done that a lot [lol]. I just know there are a lot of people wanting critiques and thought this would be a way to receive critiques if the person wished to participate but they also need to leave a critique as well. Comments from other users is a very good way to improve IMO even if the person leaving the critique is a beginner. Well one good thing came out of this, it shows that we [users] can have concerns and talk about it responsibly.
Thanks,
Scott.
