I can´t take part in the challenge either, Im preparing for my trip to Rome and London so there´s no time to go driving around the country looking for ruins.

The first shot: "You can rest here," is brilliant.
Great work - and definately a shame you can't take part in the challenge. |

You know all I have to say is that finally a challenge us rural photographers, iowa seems to have as many abandoned farms as running farms anymore, can excel in and we won't get embarassed by 17 year old Zoomdak like we do week after week. Although I think it would be interesting to see him drag an abandoned building onto the beach like he did with the bed...

I wanted to do an interior shot, but I had trouble breaking into the place of my challenge photo. It became a local phenom in past years and was drawing people from other boroughs and the owners of the land boarded and locked every entrance.

Although places are abandoned it doesnt mean the building or the land it is on isnt owned by someone. Breaking into property or trespassing on land is illegal. I dont think DPC meant for people to break the law in order to submit an image to the challenge. I also dont think 'shooting for an online photography challenge' would be a good enough excuse to tell the judge either. |

I can not imagine going into the buildings that I went to for photos... They were all so old and looked about ready to cave in... Those are great shots I dont know wich one is a favorite I like them all.

LOL hey Tracy, im in a similair situation. I can't wait untill the challenge is over to show the outtakes! I can't beleive I had the Guts to walk into these places, I don't know which one to choose! these are already disqualified from my final four contenders, and im not going with an interior shot in the challenge

Thank you all for your comments!
I love walking in abandoned places. This particular hotel is a deserted, six floor, huge building up a mountain that I've visited twice till now. First two floors where on fire some years ago also..
There is a yellowish-greenish atmosphere in every room or corridor. Its mainly from mould, humidity and the old wall paint heated by the fire..
Really a mystery/magic place and creepy too.. But its nice to get in the mood when you photograph..

While I was taking a few shots yesterday of an abandoned building, the owner of the house showed up and asked me if I wanted to buy the place. I said "No sorry, Do you have any trouble if I take a few shots for an international challenge? It will be just a minute". He replied to me that there was no problema at all, that I could take as long as I needed it, and asked me again if I was sure I didn't want to buy the building. :P |

Don't see why not, provide of course that they are no longer in use. |

It's really up to you to decide if the barns you have in mind fit your interpretation of the challenge details.
"Residential or commercial, rural or urban, abandoned buildings often have unique textures, colors and character. Show us a great photograph of a building that is no longer in use."

I'm frustrated with this challenge. I took 3 road trips this weekend, and came out empty handed. I could have definitely found some stuff in the inner city, but at risk of having to "give" my camera to someone who would have me exchange it for my life.
Anyway, I found a great spot and would have had to break in, and almost did, except there was a shopping center behind me and two people were hanging out back of one and told me to leave. They didn't really have any jurisdiction to tell me to get lost, but had I resisted, they probably would have called the police, so blah. 3 times out, and no submission. Maybe next time. |
