OKAY! The 6's are done leaving only the 7's and 8's. No more tonight though, I now I'm going to goof something up, can barely keep my eyes open. If I don't get to you before the challenge ends tomorrow and you would like a critique on your shot, please feel free to PM AFTER the challenge ends and I'll be happy to come talk about your shot next week.

I have not had a single comment on my photo :( it´s probably just an average so so hanging in the 5.155 but nobody says anything...I have commented on 114 and going to do some more because 99% of the photos are beautiful, just love them!

I haven't received a comment from Neuferland yet, so I guess my shot isn't so bad after all! LOL. I agree with everyone that the constructive comments are helpful. If I rate a photo 4 or less I will always tell the photographer why, and usually state that this is my opinion only.

Likewise I often pick shots as my favorite of a challenge that don't make it into the top 20 in the challenge, so I think it is important to tell the photographer why you liked the shot, what spoke to you about the technique or subject.

It is the vast majority of the shots "in the middle" that are difficult for me. My 5's, and 6's are sometimes subjective and it is a "gut" instinct that differentiates between them.

I like the idea of commenting on every photo for one challenge a month. If all the regular users of DPC were to do so, it would cause them to think through why they rate the shots the way they do, and explain the rating to other photographers. I think this is all part of the learning process.

Another thought on comments. I take time to point out specific areas of the photo that didn't work for me, and try to give constructive criticism. Why aren't more people reviewing comments and checking that they were helpful. I get the helpful check when I praise and nothing when I offer constructive criticism. Makes me want to keep my thoughts to myself.

Do people discount comments from photographers that aren't prolific challenge entrants? I don't have much time to capture shots that qualify for the challenges, but I review and rate 100% of the challenge entries at least 4 -5 times per month.

Well, I sure don't discount them. I don't enter anywhere near the number of challenges I vote on. I prefer constructive criticism to ones that just say "beautiful", but the latter are appreciated, for sure.

Is it just me or did the post-processing go out the window on the accidental letters challenge? It's as if a whole chunk of the entrants forgot to do any basic levels work, as if the finding of the letter should speak for itself. So much of it that I didn't comment on those posts.

Like you, I also often pick shots that don't make it into the top 20, and really enjoy going back through the challenge results to see what other people had commented on my picks. I am convinced that some really great stuff gets overlooked because the voters can't/don't take the time to contemplate each image, so I make sure to comment on those special ones.

I almost made it! NOT! LOL! But I did get over 50% commented on and even raised two of them in the last 2 minutes of the challenge, LOL! Hope my comments were helpful, if you didn't get one from me, you got either a 7 or an 8 and would like one from me, PM me and I'll try to get to them tomorrow, no barn, no errands, just a picture and commenting day!

Thanks everyone for my great finish! My 5th highest so far!

I would have scored it higher if it wasn't so dark...but as I said, black cats are so hard to photograph. Did you try a flash in addition to the outdoor lighting? That might help those situations.

Thanks, Deannda, for the very thoughtful comment you left on mine. I'll pass it on to Fido, who will appreciate it as well. (BTW, I feel kind of guilty, 'cause Fido isn't really my pet... I think he's somebody's, though???? ;-)

My daughter's pet rat, Miranda, is pleased with her showing for the most part. But be warned, this rat holds a grudge and is planning on invading the homes of the two people who voted her a 1 !!! So when you two hear chewing noises under your beds in the middle of the night, well, I just hope you're wearing your chainmail pyjamas!

Thanks very much to those who commented! Rats really are very nice pets. Miranda didn't want to pose for this shot, she just kept running up my arm to sit on my shoulder every time I tried to adjust her.

You are most welcome! How you doing by the way? We should try to get together this summer, bring my kids up so I can get some shots of them in that fantastic back yard of yours!
