Considering this for next step. Want to print 8x10s and larger. Some animal action likely in future, but for now mainly landscapes and macro work. Any of you have this setup or have thoughts on this before I take the plunge?

This is a superb lens, a little long for some kinds of landscapes, perhaps, but certainly great for wildlife action. The 1.4x will cause you to loose a stop. Your largest possible aperture with this combination will be f 5.6, which is fine on a bright day and under good light.

The f/2.8 would be ideal for this purpose but the cost is higher. Check out these shots, most of which were taken with the EF 70-200mm L f/2.8.

I have that combo, and it works great for outdoor use. THESE animal photos were taken with that setup (the first three were also shot through a thick layer of plate glass).

Check out my portfolio for more examples using this setup. I think it works great. And then you'll always have the teleconverter if you buy something like a 300mm f4L...

Its my favorite lens, I don't use my 1.4x alot though, mainly because I got the Tamron, I think its a bit soft.
But if you get the Canon Converter, its a killer combo!

I have both the Canon 70-200mm f4 and the canon 300mm f4 IS lenses and the Canon 1.4x extender II is on my list of "next to buy". I am planning to go to Machias Seal Island in Maine to see the Puffins this summer. Should help me get nice closeups.

Thanks for the heads up Zeus. The link should work now.

Amazing pictures! Looks like I need to get a canon1.4x extender for my 200mm f2.8!!Do you all recommend buying the canon over Sigma extenders?

I'm using the Kenko Pro 300 1.4x DG teleconverter with my 70-200mm 4L with very little to no loss of Performance or Detail (sharpness).

not the best example of sharpness as I was going for shallow dof with an artsy back lit shoot, but I does perform quite nicely.

The Kenko uses the same Hoya Glass as the Tamron TC's and got it for $150.00 shipped (new) from eBay.

I have also used my 50mm 1.8 on the Kenko TC with some amazing results.

My Tamron 28-300mm XR Di LD (IF) works ok in good light but at f/6.3 I end up using MF when trying to use the Macro of that lens.

I am very pleased with the Kenko Pro 300 DG on the Canon Glass.

RE: Dim 7... HERE'S a comparison of some teleconverters, but it's not really up to date. Personally, I'd stick with Canon.

Thanks Shannon!

A side question: do some or all of these teleconverters work with EF-S lenses? Or will they damage the rear element of the lens?
04/10/2005 10:28:37 AM · #15
The Canon TCs will NOT work with EF-S lenses. The TC lens elements protrude forward and the EF-S elements protrude backward- not a good mix. I initially thought that the Canon 1.4x TC would work with the Tamron 28-75, but it doesn't fit due to the protruding parts.

canon has a list of their lenses that will work with their teleconvertors.

Proves that the current Canons are better than 15 year old Tamrons I guess. LOL.
Sigma's absense is notable too.

Sigma 100-300 + Sigma 2x.
(100% crop, sharpened)

The Sigma extenders have the same protuding elements as the Canons, so will only work with the same lenses.

Amazing shots, yes...the 2.8... budget will not support that unfortunately. Thanks for all your replies.
