Can you see how many pictures a camera has taken within the camera or is the only way to know is looking at the CF card file number per picture?

If the files are set to save sequentially, you can check that. The other option i her is that canon has a serial nuber type number inthe EXIF info taht can tell you how many pics a camera has taken.

Ijust got an XT acouple of days ago and am amazed at the difference between the RAW and JPG files. Can anyone save me a bunch of time by giving me a quickie on working with RAW and convertng RAW to jPEG? It seems to me anyone with an XT or Camera that captures pics in RAW should really check into it.

Raw is great. The easiest way I know to start learning about it is to use an application like Bibble, which lets you play with settings and see the results in real time. You can adjust a whole folder of shots, then batch convert them to JPG in a subfolder.

www.bibblelabs.com

There's a free 30 day trial, which should give you ample time to experiment.

If I take a picture in RAW format with my 350XT it will not work in PS/CS. I have upgraded to RAW 2.4 for CS and it still don't work. Canon says it is not supported right now. I don't understand why because the 20D and 350XT both use .CR2 extensions. If I want to shoot raw I have to go into canon software change to tiff then open in PS/CS. To much trouble, so I shoot in L-JPG until PS/CS supports the 350XT RAW format.

I know I have to convert to JPEG in the end anyway, so why can't I edit what I can with the Digital pro program that came with the XT, convert to JPEG, then finish up in PS? Would I lose alot?

You should edit in RAW as long as possible--there's 16 bit info which is lost in JPEG, plus jpeg is a lossy format.

To follow your plan, save the intermediate file in PNG format--it's not lossy and holds 16 bit info per color.

Let me see if I know what your saying:
1.Open in canon software and save as tiff.
2.Then open in PS/CS and save as PNG format
3.Do all editing in this format then save final image as jpg

Is that what you mean?

The reason I ask is PS/CS will not even open a raw file from the 350XT.

I shoot everything in Raw, and convert them with RawShooter
It's a free download (for the time being) and it works realy great.
Be sure to download the Manual, it has some great tips!

I saw that posted in another thread but it only lets me download the 14day trial. Then what? Or am I doing something wrong. I am new to dSLR and RAW. Sorry for so many questions.

Not exactly. If you are saving as 16 bit TIFF, you don't need to use PNG. As long as you save as TIFF uncompressed, or in another nonlossy format (it's possible to use many compression schemes within TIFF, some lossy, including JPEG).

Yes, RAW shooter is similar to Bibble. I like it better in some ways, but Bibble better in others. Though free is good ;)

PS/CS will open RAW files from the Rebel 300. I don't think it would know the difference. Make sure you have the Camera RAW plug in.

I do have the plug-in and have upgraded to RAW 2.4 which is the newest plug-in that supports the canon 20D .CR2 files. The 350D/XT uses the same .CR2 extentions. Canon says that the 350D/XT is not supported in PS/CS yet. ?????
Thats where I'm at now. I wish I could find the truth and edit in PS/CS.

You're absolutely right - I just checked Adobe's website. Sorry!

Try this one. It was recommended here and on other sites:

//www.pixmantec.com/products/rawshooter_essentials.html

I have tried it a couple of times but haven't spent much time in RAW yet.

Good luck!

RawShooter Essentials is, and always will be, free. You can download it from this page. It is still a work in progress, and has some issues, but they have committed to always having a free, fully functional version available. Eventually, they will release a retail version, which I guess will have more features.

Are you sure that, with the 14 day trial, you're not thinking of Capture One? They have evaluation versions with 14 day trials. Bibble is also a retail product with either a 14 or 30 day trial.
