Thinking about getting the Pentax *ist Ds - 2 Zoom Digital SLR Outfit - *ist DS Digital SLR w/ Pentax 18-55mm Zoom & Quantaray 70-300mm Zoom for $899. No shipping or tax charge. If I get it in store of course tax would be added but getting from the store may outweigh the service from their web entity.
Main reasons I'm interested in this camera is that it uses Sd cards which I have 2Gb of currently. It also uses AA batteries which I also I plenty on hand. Also a very small camera that isn't to difficult to lug around.
I have held both the *ist Ds and the Rebel 350 Xt and they both feel pretty good in my hands. No battery grip needed because I have small hands. I have also tried holding the 20D and it's a monster, so that's out of the question (also funding problem).
Limit budget will always keep me from getting the more expensive lenses in any line, so I figure with the Pentax using more of their older lenses that it may be potentially cheaper to own one.
Has anyone bought one that doesn't already have Pentax lenses?Any thoughts on the use of the camera? I'm wondering why others decided on the Pentax?
I seem always make the wrong choices when it comes to electronics, so any input would be appreciated. |

There's probably a reason everyone else gets a canon...it's the leader in the digital photography field...settle for nothing less. ;-)

The 350 is an impressive looking camera, with much better image quality than the Pentax, and little noise at high ISOs, so you'll be able to get away with using slow lenses.
On the other hand, you could go down the route I took with a Minolta 7D, as I see you're used to Panasonic's IS. All my Minolta lenses are now image stabilised which was an important consideration for my needs. Even the 50mm 1.8 lens. The noise levels on the Minolta are also roughly equal to the 20D/Rebel 350. |
