I notice there are quite a few DPC'ers who jump right out there and get shots on the spot. There have been moments when, I too, would like to grab my camera, and photo something/someone in a public place, but just didn't have the nerve. One of my City Life Outtakes was taken on the sly at the scene of an accident, but I was nervous the whole time. Another time I wanted to photo a homeless man holding up a sign between cars looking for help in the rain - and give him money, too - but didn't have the guts to get out of the car. Is there a way to get past this? Any comments/ideas/experiences to share?

karen, i''m just like you. the number of times that i''ve thought to myself ''this would be a cool shot'' and haven''t taken the shot ... too many to count. having said that, positive reinforcement works. i took a shot of a reading guy (w/out him noticing) for the city life challenge but didn''t submit it here. well, it just won one of the first prizes in the june competition on betterphoto.com. just go for it. it may be a shot you regret not having taken. and i think with a little practice you may dare to take those shot more often. i hope i do.

btw, what made it a little easier for me is that i have a swivel lcd on my camera so i can move that out and ''shoot from the hip'' w/out being too obvious! i guess i won''t quite get over being shy after all. :)

Good for you about your reader photo! That's wonderful!
Thanks for the encouragement, too.

I would say you just have to start doing it. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will be.

Mucho shy!!! Boy, you would think I was afraid if I pointed a camera at someone they would pull out their AK47 and take my head off.

I have pointed cameras at inanimate objects such as trees, cars, buildings, flowers, and what not. They don't stare back. Sometimes I even point my camera at a dog, cat, or occaisonal bird. BUT to point a camera at a human being ....

Humans do make the best subjects. I need to swallow my tongue... OOPS I mean my shyness, ask the subject when appropriate, take a deep breath and point my camera at living, breathing, humans if I want to became any better at smapping pics.

please don't swallow your tongue, that could be fatal : )

here is what i do to rationalize pointing the cam at humans:

i tell myself 'what's the absolute WORST that can happen?' they could ask me what I'm doing, or frown? that won't kill me! : )

sometimes I just ask. i find sometimes if i say that I am a photography student and I have an assignment, people are willing to let me do whatever I want.

showing people the pictures on my lcd after the fact usually also makes them happy and excited. ive even had people ask me if they could have or even buy a copy!

I also always have these words ready, if needed, which havent yet been: "i'm sorry but it's not against the law to take pictures in public for private use."

you just have to steel yourself and do it, and believe me, it gets easier as you start to realize that most people arent even paying the slightest bit of attention to what you're doing ! : )

Yesterday I started going out on my breaks from work to practice taking photos of people without them knowing. One thing I tried was taking a shot from the hip while still moving, but the shutter/focus lag makes this kind of hard. I think magnetic9999 is right though, most people aren't paying attention.

Would there be legal issues though with posting a shot of someone you didnt ask permission of to a web gallery?

I think I might start posting some of the shots I get to pbase, once I start getting some really good ones.

It seems like the fish don't like their privacy invaded as well. While out swimming for a 'fear' picture, a marbled electric ray almost shocked me, it was right on top of my face. I felt fear. I took a picture of him, but haven't submitted it because he doesn't look so spectaclar!
