Help would be appreciated........
Im going out to buy a new lens for my Digital Rebel and want a zoom telephoto......
Was looking at the Canon EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM.
Anyone have that lense or something equivalent in an off brand that they could suggest?
I would like the most bang for my buck.
I have the standard 18-55mm now and looking for a telephoto.
Thanx for your help........

that does constrain things a little... I was going to suggest a 70-200 instead, since they are faster and the optical quality is better, but the cheapest of the 70-200s is above what you want to spend. I'm not in a position to judge the optical quality of the 55-200, however it is very slow, and that would be my main concern with it; it will limit you to good light (or radically high ISO).

I found a canon 70-200 f4L on ebay for $405, of course is "barely used" as they said but is a great top line lens.
Here is the link: //cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4687&item=7505621772&rd=1

I had the 55-200mm for a while...it was a nice lens (as sharp or sharper than any of the other budget lens) I replaced a Quantaray 70-300mm (absolutely worthless) with the 55-200mm. I did get some pretty good shots with the 55-200 and it compliments the kit lens nicely...it is the sister of the kit lens, Plastic Mount and all. It has nice bokeh
and was pretty sharp and resonably quick AF.
I found it just wasn't long enough reach for me...but over all it was a pretty good performer.

I wouldn't count on getting it for 405.00 of eBay...I have been watching/bidding on 70-200mm 4L for a month or so before just going out and getting a new one.
People on eBay are nieve and will bid a used one up to as much as a new one in the last few minutes of the auction.... best you will do on ebay for that lens is 480-510 + shipping.

Too bad! I got mine on my country on a partner site of ebay for $400.00,
with the original box and every thing looked like brand new!. I guess I was very lucky then. |

That'd be too short for him, he wants a Telephoto zoom in the 55-200mm range.
I'll recommend what most people have already here. Wait a bit, save your money and get the 70-200mm f/4L, best bang for your buck at US$579.95

I could save for it but it was going to be a birthday present from my in-laws and i don't want to take advantage.
Is there any off brands that work better with a long zoom?

Ill look into the Sigma but i think the 135mm might be too much space between my 55mm lens and the 135mm

Oh man - you just tell them which lens would be best for capturing the precious moments of your in-laws grandchildren and they'll pony up. ;-) |

Why does everyone want to sell themselves short in the reach department. Explain why you would want a 55-200 f4-5.6 over the 75-300 f4-5.6...and I'll refute each reason why you should get the 75-300.

I have the 55-200mm lens that I bought with my Rebel. I also have the Sigma 70-300mm APO as well. Both are good lenses for the class. Sigma may be cheaper, about 190 dollars, and the Cannon is about 210 dollars. Optically other than the range, I think both are about the same. If you use it in good sunlight, it's fast enough.
As for the differences:
Canon's built quality is same as the kit lens, plastic mount (Sigma's is metal), lightness, focus ring is a bit loose. Sigma is heavier more solid, more damped zoom ring. I like the Sigma better here.
Focus speed is noticably faster with the Canon, not a big difference in bright light, but noticable.
Sigma takes the same 58mm filters as the kit, Canon takes 52mm filters.
Sigma's tend to be a bit cheaper and comes with a bag and a lens hood.
I like the Canon if I'm taking pictures of things that move more, for stationary objects, Sigma gives me more reach. I'd recommend either of the two. You just have to decide what you want. If you want to upgrade later on you can sell it and move up. As for me, I intend to keep the lenses and upgrade soon.
Don't worry too much about what you shoot with unless you are doing this for a living. Just enjoy shooting.

D'oh I didn't read the entire post. My bad.
I'd suggest the Tamron 75-300 f4-5.6 It's pretty sweet and WAY cheaper than $300. :D Saves you some money for a 50mm f1.8 if you don't have it and a 1.4 if you do! ;)
