Okay boys, girls, dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, fish and any other beast I might have missed, if you received a 4 or below or a 9 or above from me, I have commented on your shot. If you are inbetween, I am working on them and will try to get to as many as possible. As an animal lover I am loving this challenge and learning so much and hoping to help others learn as well.

I challenge everyone who gave 5 or below to a shot to leave a comment as to why. It's easy to say, "GREAT SHOT" "I LOVE IT" "PERFECT! A 10!" and move one but they obviously aren't the ones who need the critique or the reasons why their shot might not be doing as well as they thought. I will start on the 5's tomorrow and work my way up the ladder. Come on people, tell them what it is about their shot that you didn't like, could be corrected and how they can go about it. Teach and learn as well, that is what DPC is all about!

You left a wonderful comment on my pet photo and I appreciate your time, effort and very constructive thoughts on my photo. Thank you very much ::smiles::

Hehehe, thanks for your comment on mine (and better yet, your score).

It's a real shame more people won't take you up on that challenge, a comment telling you your photo is wonderful is great, but just as important are the comments that point out whats wrong with it !

Cheers

Yeah, thanks for your coment. It more r less agrees with what I (retrospectively) feel. Pity I didn't work it out before I submitted.

Thanks for your comment on my pet page.

One question though. I'm a fairly new addition to the challenge scene. How do I add my own comment to my challenge entry, so I can respond to some of of the comments?

You can go to the commenter's profile and click the PM button to reply, however a lot of people don't like you doing this as it removes the anonymous aspect of the challenge and may seem like you're begging for a higher score. Once a challenge is over you can add comments replying to other comment the same way as you do in the forums, but clicking the quote button.

And I should be able to get a lot, if not all of them done today as I finally have a free day, no barn, no errands, just a few things at home that can wait if really needed ;)

Got mine Deannda. You are spot on in my opinion (what you liked and didn't like about my shot showed you really gave it a good study) Excellent observations. I really appreciate the time and advise. A big 'good on ya' and thanks. Theresa

Okay, the 5's are done, some got bumped, some didn't but none went down. I never, ever lower a score on second pass, might raise it but never lower it. That leaves the 6, 7 and 8's ;)

Deannda
Still working on them :)

Sometimes I am reticent about commenting on photos I give below a 5, I don't want to hurt people's feelings, because I know how hard it is to get a good shot. And since I am not a great photographer, sometimes I wonder if I have a right to comment on someone else's shortcomings in a picture...it hurts to have unpleasant comments made about a picture: I know I have been there many times...I like the comments that give me an idea I could have used or something I could have done to improve the picture: however, some are just unkind comments.

I try not to be unkind, I really do. And I try to comment on how they can improve or if they want help they are more than welcome to ask me privately. I'm certainly no expert but what I comment on is what I see and what I like or don't like about the shot. Sometimes the technical part is easy, bright light, hot spot, focus but sometimes it's just a matter of how it's set up or cropped that can make a huge difference in a shot.

I do tease sometimes but always let them know when I do. If I have offended or hurt anyone's feelings with my comments, I apologize right now but that is why they are here, same as me, to learn, don't get me wrong, I can live with all positive comments but I need the negative too, so I can work on improving what's wrong in other people's eyes. It might be something very obvious that I missed! :)

Deannda
Hope I didn't offend you dragonlady! :)

We would all prefer to get nothing but glowing remarks, but I think we need to remember that negative comments are not about us as people or even us as photographers, they are simply about ONE photo we took.

In the grand scheme of things, that is a very small part, yet can make a big difference if we can learn something from it.

Giving (and receiving) praise is more fun, but probably not as useful as trying to help the ones could do with a helpful hand.

I don't mind criticism..but just have a question about when people don't tell me what to change in the picture...I need to know more than, "I wouldn't put this on my wall" or "bland"...why?

And that is when you go back after the challenge, PM the commenter and ask them! If they don't answer, ask someone else, put it in the forums for critique. People will help.

Yeah, that has happened to me too but I don't let it get me down, I know not everyone is going to appreciate my opinion simply because it is just that, My opinion, my thoughts, my feelings. But the percentage of people who appreciate your comments to the bozos that don't is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH higher (did I mention how much higher it is?) and worth it when you start to really develope relations here and get some of the better photographers to help you as well.

Okay, just got some more done that I had originally rated a 6, some got bumped, some didn't but that's a few more done. I'll be gone most of the day tomorrow but will be back in the afternoon to work on some more!

Deannda
And it's not a coincidence that most comments are from women, we love giving our opinion and talking! :)
