Hi All
This was taken last week in the Snowy Mountains near Thredbo, Australia. Almost snow time here, can't wait ! Can I have any suggestions on some post processing if any ? I use photoshop. This is straight from the camera. I don't get to take many sunrises/sunsets so I'm quite proud of this attempt ! If you have a few seconds I'd appreciate any comments you wish to leave.

Well its in the Snowy region of Aus, but too early yet for snow when this was taken. There is no huge mountain peaks like in Europe, US, Cananda etc. More like big hills and the skiing is fantastic !

Beautiful shot, Lisa. I was just there about a month ago. It rained the two days I was there, but it was still a gorgeous place. While the rain kept me from going up the mountain, I did manage to get this sunset:

Interesting out-of-camera shot. The saturated colors come from the image being underexposed. You will be able to tell this from the histogram display in Photoshop. You will see the light intensity graph shifted toward or crowding the left side of the display.

Properly exposed images normally have their light intensity graph centered and it is 'best' when spread across the entire display area. If your camera has a histogram display you can turn on while taking pictures you might try leaving it on while taking pictures (not just sunsets) as an aid for proper exposure.

It is always best to take pictures properly exposed. You can bring out that same color saturation in PS using curves by nicely bowed curve from the straight line downward and to the right with just two drag points. The advantage is you have a better exposure to work with and avoid clipping colors or having severely over or underexposed areas.

Typically, underexposing increases the electronic noise in the image. Yours, however has very low noise. Must be nice. You are lucky having the camera you do. Noise typically shows up most noticeably in the sky and that is what sunsets are all about. :) I always get lots of noise under those conditions. My sunsets - //www.pbase.com/azleader/sunset

Sunsets are interesting to photograph because of extreme light variations across the frame, particularly right at the time the sun is setting. You can be well over exposed near the sun, but very underexposed away from the sun. It is best to take exposures as quickly as possible and over a range of exposure values. You will be surprised at the variety in the images you get that way.

That also means it is hard to know if you have a proper exposure. I recommend always trying to expose for the brightest part of the sky first and go from there.

That was so informative stdavidson, thankyou I will take that into account next time I shoot sunsets. It was a quick pitstop, point and shoot and back in the car. A long day driving with two tired kids in the back, but I couldn't help myself !

Thankyou for sharing your pic eqsite !
