Well, I have decided to put all my Film SLR's back in the bag and jump to digital... I don't want to spend that much 1 being I am only 18 and 2 being I am no pro (yet...) I am really only wanting to spend maybe... 900... I am not sure. I am in a toss up between a 300D 350D or a D70 or if someone has a 20D they want to sell me for under a 1000 :) Any help in swaying my decision would be AWSOME

cheers,
Ryan

Rebel XT, simply incredible.

What lenses do you have from your film SLRs? than could affect what is your best choice for digital.
If you do go in the Canon direction, I'd suggest the 350D for the budget-conscious buyer who still wants as much flexibility as possible.

From my Canon I have my 50mm f 1.8 and my 105mm Macro and my 28-80

I don't mind having to buy lenses if I were to go down a different road than Canon, I would just sell the ones I have to acomodate. How interchangable are the lenses for film SLR to DSLR?

Pretty much everyone is saying 350D and I also read though that the hacked 300D is just as good as the 350D... I dunno...

cheers,
Ryan

I would suggest you go to the store and play with all your options a bit and see which one feels better in your hand and how intuitive the controls are.

And if they let you shoot, bring a blank card and do some test shots.

350D, no question. The hacked 300D isn't really the same. Your lenses will work fine, but the focal lengths will be multiplied by 1.6 (the 50mm lens becomes an 80mm). The 350D body is $882 shipped at ibuydigital.com (or $6 more if you prefer black).

Rebel XT without question. I just purchased one and love it. It is very comfortable in my hands like my old film SLR and itâs not to light and not to heavy, very balanced. It has many great features that Iâm still learning. Going from prosumer to dSLR is making the learning curve hard but if you are use to film SLR you should have little problem.
When I purchased my Rebel XT I also looked at the Canon 20D, Nikon D70, and Rebel 300D all of which are great cameras. I felt going with the Rebel XT and using the savings on lens I would come out better and I did. B&H is a great place to make your purchase, they are professional, prices are good, and shipping is timely.

Well it looks like you have some decent lenses... selling and re-acquiring would certainly be feasible, but of course you'll lose some money in the process.
Assuming that your film body was Canon EOS-mount, the lenses will work just fine.

No offense to those posting here but I think that answering a question such as yours about camera choice with words like absolutely, definitely, without question, etc., but buy a âinsert brand name hereâ are doing a disserve. Camera bodies (within similar price ranges) are similar enough in quality to make it a personal choice of what feels right for you. The two best pieces of advice here are to go try them out and be sure to consider the lens system you may already have (assuming you are happy with it).

It never ceases to amaze me how we become so brand loyal that we want the world to go down the same path as ourselves. But I guess it is just human nature.

If you are not going to be bound by the lenses you currently own, you own it to yourself to seriously consider the Pentax *ist DS and the Olympus E-300, both in that price range. The E-300 has the Sonicwave feature to fight sensor dust and an all new, designed for digital, lineup of lenses.

"Without question" that is very sound advice.

Go to the stores and hold them in your hands. Comfort at your set price range may be the biggest issue. Some of the nickle and dime feature differences may or may not be a big deal. For example, the difference between my camera shooting 3fps or 5fps will probably never be an issue for me. On occasion some of the finer differences might matter quite a bit so it's hard to say whats right, not knowing your style or exact needs per se.

After meeting your basic requirements with some room to play, go for the feel.

I don't own any stock in The Nikon Corporation.

Spoken like a true Nikon user in a room full of Canon users! J/K.. I wholeheartedly agree. Doesn't matter what everyone else is using, use what feels "right" to you.

Hey Fetor, did you happen to notice how much that outfit is charging for the 3 yr extended warranty? Same thing sells for $70 at B&H. Whadaya bet they won't sell the the 20D w/o the ex war?

I'm in the same boat.....seriously looking at the XT. Most probably my choice. Can any one tell me if I can use batteries instead of the battery pack? I would be willing to go that route to allow extra $ for lenses.

I dunno about the Rebel but the D70 comes with a seperate battery holder that allows for 3 CR-2 batteries to be used as a backup, although I've not bought any as yet as the battery life is simply amazing, I took 340 images on Sunday night and another 400 last night and the battery is still showing as full.

OMG! that is sooo expensive! Question, Can't you buy the extended warrenties on Ebay? cause if so... 800 for a 20D would be awsome, hell the 350 has a amazing price as well... They all do, now if they just sell the cameras without the warrenties

04/07/2005 01:48:16 PM · #18
At $800 for a new 20D the seller is taking a loss, and he is going to find a way to make a profit. Usually it comes by including accessories in a bundled package; or by using high pressure sales pitches when they call you to confirm the order. Theoretically you could force these low ball internet sellers to sell you the camera alone at the advertised price, but you will probably have to go to court to do it. And don't hold your breath waiting for it to arrive. Your camera can get lost in shipping, or become "backordered". If it looks like the deal is too good to be true, it's probably not true.

How great is the potential for disaster when buying online?

It seems like there are maybe three or four top companies and after that it's a bit of a crap shoot, just to save a few bucks. Is that accurate?

Also how much of a hassle is it to get things fixed through the mail? Or are there local repair places in most cities?

The XT comes with a rechargeable battery that will last close to 600 or 800 shots or something insane like that. Unless you are hot and heavy on the shutter, as long as you leave home with a fully cahrged batt you'll be fine.

The XT outlasts the 300D and I have yet to run dry - I have taken a shade over 1200 shots and and have recharged only 3 times since i gothte camera Jan 5. And the third charge is still in teh camera showing more than 50%...

Buying on line is safe and wonderful - unless you are buying camera equipment...for some reason that field is all screwed up. I hear Dell, Buydig and b&h are OK. I have had a bad experience with Adorama so i am very wary of them. I have done good buying off sellers on eBay - just make sure you use paypal and check the feedback - positive %, total amount and what the last few auctions were so make sure you are not going to be a victim of a hijacked account (a concern with any big ticket item on ebay).
//www.fredmiranda.com/forum/board/10 fred mirand's website is busy too, and there is feedback there as well on sellers.

Any of these retailers should be safe and reputable.

This link made my decision easier:

I went with the 20D.

I've had excellent service from B&H. Reasonable prices (although not always cheapest) and fast shipping. Most service issues will be dealt with direct to Canon or Nikon by mail anyway so that should nto be an issue unless you buy grey market.

Had great mail service from Canon on a pair of IS binocs that needed a tune up. Have not used Nikon as yet.
