I currently own a Bogen 3021 tripod with a 3047 head. I just spent 3 weeks in Australia and didn't take it with me. Too long to fit in my bag, too heavy to hike around with. That to me is a sign I need a different tripod. I've been reading all the threads here and elsewhere on the net. I just can't find a clear winner. Please help me.
1. Gotta be lighter. But it also has to be able to support my D70 (1.3 lbs) with a 70-210 (1.3 lbs) and maybe even my SB800 (probably about 1 lb with all 5 batteries). So something with a hook for adding stabilizing weight, perhaps? I'm also concerned about the camera sagging when it's turned vertical. But it happens with my current setup occasionally, so I expect it will definitely happen if I get something even lighter.
2. I'm 5'8", so I'd really like something of an appropriate height- yet one that still collapses smaller than my current one. I think that means it has to be a 4 section jobby. They seem to get smaller than the 3 section jobbies.
3. Twice I've broken leg locks off of my current pod, just by carrying the thing around in a bag with other stuff in it. I really want something with lower profile locks- perhaps even the locks that twist around the legs instead of lever locks that stick out from the legs. I think some Gitzos have twist locks, but I'm not sure.
4. I really want a head with a quick release plate, but I like the ease of the ball head. Is there such a thing as a ball head/quick release plate combo??
The center column going upside down and horizontal is way cool, but probably not necessary.
So. Given all that... any suggestions? Thanks folks.

I also have a good tripod that collects dust. I find that I use my monopod all the time and get good results with it. Easy to take much shorter and lighter but, get a good graphite monopod(very light). Then you can leave the tripod for those family gatherings were you have to be in the picture also. |

I have one of these tripods I'm very happy. It has an integrated Ball Head.
Manfrotto DIGI TRIPOD WITH BALL HEAD /  Cat. No: 724B
This lightweight and compact tripod offers all the rock steady support necessary for high-quality imaging for today̢۪s digital and conventional cameras. It includes a built-in aluminum ball head with a single "ratchet" locking lever, as well as quick-action leg locks for fast set-up and breakdown.
Four section tripod legs permit a folded length just over 19" making the 724B ideal for fitting into luggage. The 724B weighs 3lbs and can support digital (and film) camera’s up to 7.7lbs. In addition, the innovative three faceted center column design prevents any column rotation and is reversible for low-angle shots. A rucksack-style bag (MBAGD) is also included.
Maximum Height with extended center column 64.6 inches
Closed Length 19.7 inches
Leg Sections 4
Maximum Load Capacity 7.7 lbs
Weight 3.1 lbs
List Price: US $ 124.00

I have an Adorama Podmatic monopod with a little Bogen ball head (can't remember which one at the moment- I'm at work :) I love it, but honestly I don't take it out much either! Not sure why. I'm more prone to lean against a wall or something for support than pull out the monopod. Whereas I really want to be able to shoot tiny apertures and long shutter speeds- can't do that with anything but a tripod.

I know i'll get the tripod snobs looking down their noses at this but I'm a serious backpacker and have been using a Vivitar VPT 120 for about 8 years (Im actually on my second one - a recent Ebay pickup).
They are incredibly light and durable - i cant begin to tell you where I've lugged it and under what conditions. And new they are only $20. |

One drawback that i see with it is that it is only 5'4" with the center fully extended. Most pods are not very stable w/center fully extended, and even then this one is not very high. Way too short for me, but I'm about 6"taller than you.

How heavy is the gear you're putting on it? That might be the defining difference.

Yeah, I see your point. Though this seems like a pretty good contender against not using one at all. I'll have to start paying very close attention to how high I would normally shoot, if I was to use a tripod.

I'm 6'6" and it is tall enough for me. It is still very stable even with the center column extended. |

Have you thought about getting a tripod strap? They're only $20 at most. Tripod is a lot lighter when carrying on your shoulder.
I really don't think you'll save much weight with your tripod. The 3021Pro is 5.3lbs. Even if you go carbon fiber, you'll only save 1-2 lbs. That's not much and the money is better spent elsewhere.
As far as the sagging goes, that sounds more like a head issue than a leg issue. I suggest investing in a decent quality ballhead like a Kirk BH-3 or Acratech UB. They're pricey but you get the advantage of Arca-Swiss plates (custom fit to your camera, they won't twist) and the peace of mind that you'll probably never make another upgrade.
You're right about Gitzo. They all come with twist locks instead of levers.

Thanks for that. I have a feeling that even a couple of lbs will make a difference to me, not to mention having a shorter closed length... and different locks...
I will definitely look at a tripod strap however, and a different head as well. Even if I buy a different legset these two items will certainly help in other areas.
Thanks!

p3wiz, how much weight are you putting on the tripod? Are you using big glass? A flash? Does not having a quick release cause a problem?

I'm not sure which tripod to go with, but I can tell you that I have a Bogen pistol grip tripod head and it is awesome. It has the quick release, you can move it 360 degrees and when you let go of the triger it locks in tight. good luck |

regarding the 724B,
I put my 350D with upto a 75-300mm lens no flash and no problems. Putting the camera on/off is the only weak part I have found. I'm extra careful and ensure that I have a good grip on the camera and turn the tripod. I haven't dropped it yet, but when I do it will be the tripod not the camera (I hope). |

Gah! That's the only problem I've found with it- the head's not removable, so I can't put a different head on it even if I wanted to! Damn, I was thisclose to buying one too.

Do you have a budget for your tripod?
I would suggest an Arca/Swiss style quick release system no matter what tripod you decide to get. It is very easy to use, it locks tight without any wobble and it is fairly universal.

Well, I was hoping I could sell my current setup for about $150, which is what I bought it for, and get something more suited to me for the same or maybe a little more. I just checked out the Kirk heads and plates- they look very nice, and I'd be willing to spend the money (over time maybe :D).... assuming I have legs to stick them on!
Going now to research the differences between arca/swiss, acratech, kirk, etc.
Thanks for the tips guys.

I have one Kirk head that is very well made. All of my lenses that have a collar have a Arca/Swiss type plate attached. The brands vary, but that is the best part about using this style of quick release plate. They are all interchangable. Of all the plates I have I would have to say that the one that looks to be machined to the highest standards came from Wimberley.

Done! Bought a Bogen 728B.
1. 3.9 lbs- I think that's with the head! I think my 3021 legs are 5.3 lbs without the 3047 head!
2. Comes with a 3 way quick release head and a bag
3. Collapses to 20.3 inches, 5 inches shorter than my current pod
4. Can hold 7.7 lbs- I think I have it worked out that my entire setup weighs less than 4 lbs
5. 65" fully extended
6. Rapid column is reversible
7. Low profile leg locks
For as much staring at tripod descriptions as I've been doing, I can't believe it took two days for it to sink in that this one was perfect. Got it on eBay for just under $130 shipped. Now I just have to be patient till it arrives!!
