How often do you guys use filters and which filters do you typically use?

I often use a circular polarizer, occasionally neutral density filters, other than that almost never.

I use a Crap Photographs filter

When i get home and upload them to the PC my filter normally forces me to delete them. However it occasionally doesn't work and allows me to submit rubbish like my Pet Portraits submission.

I think I need to have a good look at it and see if I can get it working properly again

Steve

p.s. Recently a polariser

You need to add a filter to get that effect? Mine came built into my camera.

I use a Circular Polarized filter for some outdoor shots and I use a Graduated ND filter for times when there is a large difference in light between two sides of a scene. Recently went to the Cokin P Series so might be trying others.

Tallbloke,

You are in rare form tonight! I loved your doesn't fit the challenge comment earlier as well! I think I might have the Crap Photograph filter as well. I've been having problems getting clear pictures with my AF Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8D ED lens. It was suggested to put a UV filter on the lens to "protect the glass" when I bought it at a local camera store. With both auto and manual focus I am seeing the same results. Anyone else have recommendations regarding using a general filter. I'm more interested in protecting the lens than anything else, but if it's going to add to the "crappiness" of my photos....

You have quite an expensive lens there. Protect it with an expensive filter. Cheap filters negate all the coatings that were incorperated into your lens. Those coatings are one of the main reason your lens cost as much as it did. Use a multi coated filter. Hoya, Pentax, B+W, Heliopan, ect.. make great multi coated filters. As far as the crap filter goes though, some cameras come with them stock and others must be added by the owner.
