I̢۪m about to purchase my first DSLR, and I̢۪ve heard both that I should and should not buy the extended warranty. I was wondering what experiences ya̢۪ll have had either way?

I never opt for the extended warranty on anything and haven't been caught out yet (touch wood)

Depends on where you are buying it from, Some are a good deal others aren't.

I would say get the warranty from the manufacturer of your camea. Most of the time you are given a one year warranty on new products. Usually the manufacturer will send you a noitice when the original one is about to expire. I would say get it then from the manufacturer.

Really depends on how long you plan on owning the camera. If you are going to upgrade as soon as the next model comes out, skip the ex war. If you plan on keeping the camera for a while and the ex war is not too expensive go for it. Some retailers like Best Buy and Circuit City offer their own in-house plans that can be good deals because of very full coverage. The low ball online sellers will price the ex war very high to allow them to make up for having a dirt cheap price on the camera.

I bought my 20D from a local camera shop that didn't offer ex war. And then bought a 3 yr MackCamera ex war from B&H for only $70. And it is transferable to the next owner which will increase the resale value of my 20D.
