Does a phot have to be cropped in a square to enter it in a challenge? could I use ovals, hexagons, or other unusual shapes. I have a few prints I sell at home that have unusal shapes that I feel enhance the image. So whats the rule on this? if there is one.

Might run afoul of the border rule.

You can enter a non-rectangular image, but you'll probably be burned at the stake for your heresy. :)
Actually, I don̢۪t know the answer to your question. I̢۪ve seen non-rectangular entries before, but the rules may have changed since then. It would probably be best to get an answer from the SCs first. Good luck!

Thanks.. I agree maybe I should ask the SC on this one. I imagine regardless of the answer I'm likely to be lynched or tared and feathered. Oh well i'll bring the rope it's bound to be exiting.

Oddly enough, you've got no way of POSTING a non-rectinlinear image, it will show up as a shape on a rectilinerar ground, whatever color you have as the "background" I think. Unless someone knows something I don't...

It's been done before. Labuda's "Iris" for example...

For the alternate background color...

I used this technique in my second entry...
And that was in the old classic editing rules, similar to today's basic rules. Although the rules state "rectangular" area for cropping, if you crop rectangular and add a border inside that whichis distinct from the image, it should be OK. The voters may not be kind, however. You can see they were not so kind to my shot.

I'm not so sure it was the border that cost you a low score. It might have had something to do with entering a dinosaur skeleton in a Transportation challenge. Just a hunch.

Naahhh, couldn't have been that, LOL! After all, it WAS a dinosaur skeleton in an airport... OK, so it was a stretch.
