04/04/2005 12:15:37 AM · #3
How is extreme action different that normal action, especially in a photo?

The first thing that came to my mind was to photograph a fast-moving sport, but i suppose anything that is in motion will work as a subject.

The same way extreme sports is different from voleyball.

So a volleyball player making an awesome spike, super high with sand flying everywhere wouldn't be extreme enough?

Personally, I'm going to go de-rail a train, and take photos of it leaving the track.

I think that should be extreme enough.

I wouldn't think so. To me extreme action is action on the edge.

I think I will do a flower. A pretty one on a windy day.

Pink for sure.

And I'll shoot one as well, a red rose, behind a piece of glass with water drops on it! That all inside a roller coaster....

A tennis ball falling from your balcony is action.

A tennis ball falling from the empire state building is firstly illegal and secondly EXTREME action.

It seems to me that they are encouraging "extremity" in the portrayal of action, not int he action itself; in other words, lots of blur, zoom, sense of movement, that kind of thing...

Robt.

Not really.. this is from the description: "with or without motion blur."

So, that kind of puts a dent in any theory that portrayal is the main consideration.

I am hoping against hope that this doesnt turn into a extreme sport challenge.

I seem to recall a Dave Barry column about an extreme sport in Minnesota involving old junker cars towed out onto frozen lakes, airplanes with contestants dropping bowling balls out of the sky. But maybe the lakes have thawed out up north by now.

I agree with Robert (Bear_music) that the challenge forces us to capture any action in it's extremity, not simply "X"treme sports. I was out shooting a track meet yesterday and found it quite a challenge capturing the hurdlers in that specific moment with body fully extended-stretched over the hurdle.

For an amazing "extreme" sports photo, check out Steve's Digicam recent March 1st Place Photo of the Month.

The article actually has the cars on airport runways, not frozen lakes, I believe but yes, we're too thawed for cars on the lake now...at least in the southern parts of Minnesota. :)

Speeding cars, people running, dogs running? Hmmm, bears thinking about.

maybe something like this
04/04/2005 03:28:55 AM · #25
To me it's action that involves some sort of danger, like sky diving, bungi jumping, mountain climbing, rapeling, white water canoing, snow boarding, water skiing and bowling :).
