I am sitting this one out. I was so uninspired and bummed by my crappy shoot for the cemetery challenge (didn't submit) that I haven't touched my camera. Just not interested in taking pics. Guess I'm in a slump

I am curious, what differentiates a snapshot from a portrait for the pets challenge?

I'd say a snapshot is something like a candid, whre u don't actually set up and enviroment or scene for the shoot-out. In opposite to the portrait, where u can take time to work on the enviroment and model (kinda hard with pets).

Am I right?

Here's my interpretation (maybe not a good one):

A portrait:

A candid portrait:

Clarmore, that is one beautiful dog you have there! Lovely.....
04/03/2005 10:23:09 PM · #32
so whats the chance we will have a dog vs cat vs 'others' battle ?

should we run a quick poll (or a betting pool?)
what will dominate the top 3 (bottom 10) ?

(ummm cat cat cat ;)

I think there will be some surprisingly nice shots in this challenge. I'm looking forward to it.

I thought Cemetery would be loaded with the same type of headstones and composition and was really happy with what I saw.

I love animals so I'm looking forward to this one.

Good luck all.

I am surprised by the people boycotting this challenge. I personally love doing portraits and I think a quality animal portrait, like a baby portrait, is very challenging as you have limited communication and attention span from your subject.

I look forward to many quality images of beautiful animals. (and probably lots of crappy ones too...)

This photo is Martina's, and I just love it.

I'd certainly call THAT a pet portrait!

I just really hope it's not full of poor quality snapshots... but since it's a member only challenge it should not have too many of those.

I am really excited to see the shots in this challenge! I really think it's going to be fun voting this one.

Top 3: DOGS =), cats, ducks (haha)
Bottom 3: scared to know =)

I put alot of effort into this one and am really proud of this submission, I'm hoping to have my first finish over a 6 lol, but usually the ones that I think will do good flop with the voters, still looking forward to voting!

I am looking forward to all the real pet photos, but I know I will be rolling my eyes at a lot of "out of the box" ones - rocks, pencils, leather boots, fingernail clippings etc - that people will INSIST are their pets.

Pin him to a piece of posterboard. Slower but just as effective is overnight in the freezer.

{i]NOTICE: Some side effects may be noticed in the subject animal.[/i]

You mean dogman's ;) not going to enter? You still have time!
You're not a slump! I'm the slump. I'm the one that should not be entering because of my crappy scoring cemetery shot that I "did" enter. I have climbed to 4.9 though. What's a slump?

Oh...nevermind...another blonde moment. You said you are "in" a slump.

Don't just roll your eyes, use your vote to let them know you don't care for those kind of entries.

LOL...I had to laugh at this post, I was starting to wonder what a "slump" was myself when reading your response.

Up to 245 with an hour to go, that's not to bad, I'm sure they're still going to be a few more within the last hour.

Take a look at those numbers again there:

Member Challenge: Pet Portrait
Rules: Advanced Editing (Updated 1/3/05)
Submission: Mar. 28th - Apr. 3rd
Submissions: 248

I got mine in though my cat was NOT co-operating. She usually loves the camera and the studio area but today was not interested. So I had to go find another subject. :)

One you all haven't seen before I'm pretty sure :)

Looks like I don't get to enter.

:(

My cat has refused to comply with my schedule, and every time I've tried to get some shots he's been all over the place and totally hyper.

Oh well.

One of the pets I have, which I did not submit, is an Iguana. She is about 4 feet long and hates the camera. She is very, very beautiful and soooooo photogenic. But I have a feeling some guys will mark her down because she doesnt bark. And how can I do that to her, she has feelings you know. But I promise to share some pics someday. You will love her.

Thanks to Clarmore and everyone else who clarified snapshot vs. portrait for me. I loved the different definitions with the same dog! He/She is a beauty!

I don't think this was an easy challenge, between trying to get my subjects to cooperate and working out the "Operator Errors" on Photoshop I spent a good part of the weekend on my entry. I learned a lot and hopefully PS will get easier over time.

I am really looking forward to seeing what the "Masters" at DPC have come up for this challenge!
