"The shape of letters can be found in nature and in other objects. Create an interesting photograph containing something which has the shape of a letter but wasn't intended to be one."

The challenge description seems to imply that setting up a shot is grounds for disqualification (or at least grounds for lots of people to complain)...is that the case? I know that people will most likely vote the found shots higher, regardless, but it is still good to get this possible sticking point out of the way in advance.

So, any thoughts?

Except for the recent and wacky Duck challenge, not meeting the challenge is not grounds for DQ. However, many, many things are grounds for lots of people to complain. :)

Personally, I'd prefer shots that are found, not set up.

So, do you think that nothing in the shot can be set up?

I'm not sure if I read it that way but wouldn't mind some clarification.

I've got an idea for a shot that is completely set up, and just don't want to start a whole...thing. Anywho, just wondering...

Yes, looking back at my response and the original description, let me clarify what I meant: I'd prefer to see pictures that consist of things in which a letter was accidental. I don't really care if that item is displayed naturally or in a set up way. Is that making sense? For example - a leaf that looks like it has a letter D in it but is taken off the tree and photographed in a studio would be fine. Three wrenches set up to look like a K, not fine.

This is just my personal opinion and not any sort of official SC ruling.

Anything that appears to be setup is obviously intentional, not accidental. You won't be disqualified for it, but you will take a beating in the voting. The key word there is "appears." If you went out and spray painted black spots on a cow to create a rough letterform, who would know that was a setup? My apologies to anyone who might now have to return a can of spray paint and think of something else. ;-)

I don't think there is any way around it. A setup will score poorly, especially if its obvious.

i wondered that too. I found my letter and hopefully it is ok, wasnt set up.

A set-up isn't accidental now is it?

Unless, of course, you were carrying a whole bunch of things and tripped over your own shoes and everything crashed to the ground and formed a great big "L".

Oh, and a finger and a thumb in the shape of said "L" on your forehead probably wouldn't be a great idea either.. unless you want a score that would be self-prophesized ;)
