A simple question to answer I imagine.
When I look at my original on Iphoto (mac o5), my originals all say modified at and give a time..which is before I have uploaded? Is this because I shoot large size jpeg? Does this count as an original, should I ever need to submit? So far I have kept my shots on my cards just in case. I always duplicate before touching the shot. I then click and modify according to the rules in PS. Any feedback will be appreciated.
This may be a stupid question-I am a digital newbie.

You'd be better off copying the files from the cards to the hard drive using the OS, not iPhoto or other software. Or you can burn them to CD-R before you do anything else.

Robert, just download your photos off your card, and put those originals in a safe place (folder, back-up CD etc). Always make a copy to work on, and for dpc, make sure you know which original you copied (it can get confusing when you take 50 nearly identical shots and then pick the best of the bunch).

iPhoto automatically uploads my shots. The originals are untouched by me, do they count as originals when they say modified..even though it is before the upload?

That's why I try to avoid having the computer do things "automatically" for me -- I'm pretty sure that these files will show a "modified date" as applied by iPhoto -- I really can't say if that counts as an "original" or not, but quite possibly not.

I'm with General.... I don't like these things telling me what to do... I like to tell THEM and have it done my way!
Get a card reader, and show it who's boss!

I like how easy it is..maybe that's theproblem. Is there a way to find out? As well the strange part is the modified word appearing 3 hours before the imported time. This doesn't sound like iphoto is doing it.
Thanks for your advice GeneralE and Beetle. I will have to look into this I guess.

I always download directly to iPhoto and haven't had any problems. If I edit a shot in an external editor, I am careful to Save As another name to avoid overwriting the original. iPhoto always saves your original file as a separate version, and that file is no different than if you had downloaded it directly to your Mac outside of iPhoto. Any editing you do in iPhoto creates a new file on your hard drive, leaving your original untouched. If in doubt, you can duplicate a photo before editing for extra security. If asked to submit the original, just select your photo and choose "Revert to Original," then export that file for submission.

So by no means an iPod is a good device (to have on a trip for example), to store the photos? if u're planning to use some or one of them for a challenge?

Do your originals show themselves as modified or do you think it is because I shoot large jpg?

I almost always shoot as large JPEG, everything goes directly into iPhoto, and I've certainly submitted plenty of originals for validation. Check to see if the modified files are oriented vertically. If your camera was held sideways to shoot as a tall (portrait) format, then iPhoto will recognize that and automatically rotate your images so that they're all right side up for viewing. Those images will show up as having been modified (they were rotated), but iPhoto creates a folder on your hard drive for that date called "Originals," and the un-rotated files are stored there- exactly as your camera captured them. You can find them in that folder manually if you want to be absolutely certain you have the original, but "Revert to Original" would probably yield the same result. (I received your PM, but probably better to respond here for the benefit of others).

Scuds- An iPod Photo will work fine for offloading images on a trip. It will not modify your originals, though iPhoto may create an altered copy, as noted above.

scalvert,
Original, digitized date, and modified all show the same time. So I suppose it is irrelevant. I get this from get info-anywhere else I should look? That folder(originals)..on mine I think it is Library..or am I missing something? I haven't found the Revert to Original yet , but will keep looking. Thanks for your help.

I'm assuming iPhoto means your using a Mac, but on a PC at least, there will always be a "Modified On" date and time. If the file hasn't been modified, it's just the time the file was created (even if it hasn't been modified at all). If you have an unedited version of your photo, you should be all set.

If the times are all the same and "Revert to Original" is grayed out in your Photos menu, then you ARE looking at the original. Once you make a change (try rotating or editing a file in iPhoto), then Revert to Original becomes an active menu choice, and iPhoto will move the originals into a new folder on your hard drive. For a photo modified today, the original would be found in iPhoto Library>2005>04>03>Originals. Try it.

Please note that this ONLY applies to images modified within iPhoto itself. If you select an original image in iPhoto (Revert to Orginal is grayed out) and choose Open in External Editor (to work in Photoshop, etc.), then you are working outside of iPhoto's control. If you then hit Save in Photoshop, you will be writing over the original since iPhoto had not made a duplicate. That scenario almost cost me my first ribbon. It's always a good idea to create a duplicate before editing, but as long as you choose Save As in Photoshop, you'll be fine.
