I have been given a huge photo album of old photo's to scan. Some of the pictures in here are over 100 years old.

They were placed into their current photo album somewhere around 20 years ago. This album is one of thsoe with the sticky pages and thin plastic cover that flips over the top of the photos. I am carefully taking the images out without causing damage to the photo itself, but some of the paper from the album backing is coming off on the photos. That is a whole other project in itself...

My question: Does anyone have an opinion about the best kind/type of photo album that I can put these into that will keep them from damage as tehy sit for (hopefully) 100 more years?

The pictures are in surprisingly decent shape for the most part and I wish to keep them in that state. I really have no limitations on costs for long term storage (well, as long as it does not involve noble gas filled rooms or something).

I have found some solutions, but wanted to get opinions from those that likely have some experience in this area.

Thanks!

What ever you do donât put your photos back in a âstickyâ album, as the acid from the glue will deteriorate your photos further. You were lucky to get them out of the old album now, those albums have been known to destroy precious photos.

There are many photo safe ways to store photographs. Albums can be purchased from national chain stores like Michaels Crafts, in specialty stores that sell nothing but scrap booking supplies, or from independent consultants like Creative Memories. The most important thing is to ensure that what ever product you use is acid and lignin free. Look at the package of all the supplies to ensure the manufacturer is specifiying acid and lignin free, âphotoâ safe isnât always as safe as it sounds.

For antique photos I like the scrap books that have black pages, you can use adhesive photo corners to hold the photo in the pages. I recommend that you get the plastic sleeves to protect the photos from fingers and dust too as they are being looked at by others. These can be purchased at the above mentioned places.

Finally you need to store your photos in a safe, dry place. Photo albums are not to be tossed in the basement or attic. Photo albums should be stored upright so the photos arenât under pressure or âstressedâ.

If you tell me what area of the world you are located in, I can try to refer you to a specialty store where they will be happy to educate you further and help you pick the appropriate products for your project. If the photos have âlivedâ this long you should do all you can to ensure future generations can enjoy them as well.
