Well, it is - or at least used to be - a photograph made at the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens. I'm generally not one for heavy-handed use of Photoshop filters, but do like the watercolor look here.

What do you think? While the original has been modified substantially, it did serve as a starting point for this. Is it too much PS? The original image is here:

Thanks, Mike. I appreciate the comment. Other than the purple flower, can you identify anything else about the composition that you might change?

Is this a photograph?
I'm of the opinion that it now should be placed in the digital art category. It's a beautiful treatment and I like the original, also.

Works for me. I don't think the watercolor filter is obvious (or necessary). The most important change is the improved depth and impact you've achieved by darkening the background. I think you might find a more pleasing look by using a Smart Blur filter for better bokeh on the background rather than the Watercolor filter.

You started with an out of focus photo. I wonder what you could have done with a good photo.

The second one is an improvement over the original, but the original is not a technically good shot. Not sharp, low contrast and hazy.
The editied one has fixed some of that but i would still call it a photograph, no where near water color like for me.

Thanks for the comments. The reason I did the watercolor was to mask my bad original... :-)

You can't make a sows ear into a silk purse, or is that dress up a pig you can't take her out...or am i just referring to anna nicole smith?

You can take an out of focus shot an dfade it ans use it as a background to a montage.

Pretend you hadn't seen the original. What do you think of the "watercolor"? ;-)

Initial reaction? Soft and noisy with a distracting purple flower in the background.

I favor crisply sharp photos, so take that comment for waht it is worth to you.

the noisy bit is the watercolor filter i think (particualrly noticeable to me on teh yellow petals)

the purple flower, well, that is just basic composition stuff there. Fairly easy to fix in PS.

I am 'new' to flower photography (umm, taken 4 or 5 shots of flowers...)
I get these:
If yo ulook in the lower left there was another bloom there - a bit of severe burning makes it less noticeable.

Was an earlier attempt with my 'new' equipment. I think it has an arty-er feel to it, just not sure how much i like it.

And here is my attempt to 'fix' a sub par photo

I believe I'd have opened the aperture a couple of stops for a better depth of field and an overall sharper image. composition is, well, I'd not have framed it that way. Surely there was angle to eliminate the purple flower and get the subjects on a more equal plane so they could both be in focus. It is very easy to get caught up in the digital darkroom game......but an original photo that is well composed, in focus, and exposed properly is the best present you can give yourself in the final outcome.
