The original photo was taken on Thursday at a local playground. The picture itself was pretty bland in my opinion and the lighting kinda sucked. After playing with other pictures and learning from mistakes, I took this one and made a real effort on getting something nice out of it.
Steps (as best as I remember):
1. Sharpen
2. Adjustment Layer: Brightness & Contrast (around 20 / 45 respectively)
3. Adjustment Layer: Hue / Sat (sat = -100 for B&W)
4. Filter - Render Lighting Effect - Spot Light centered between them, just above the shoulders, pointing up. Then adjusted the intensity and width until I got that.
5. Used the brush tool to paint black on the Hue/Sat layer to bring back the color to the clothes and eyes. Kept the contrast on them.
Personal Comments:
1. I love the color of the red shirt. I think that really stands out nicely.
2. I wish the eyes would have come out brighter. The only thing I didn't try was to add a new layer, blank out everything but the eyes, and then increase the contract on just them. I didn't do it for the PITA factor.
3. I tried my best to find a way to get the light ring to fade to black more in the upper left and right hand corners. Everything I did looked like junk so I left it be (burn - brush).
Anyway, comments would be great.
PS: Edited to make into a link. Sorry... I get caught up in my broadband world I guess.

i think that you should link to the images, posting them this big in the forums takes up too much space.

the added contrast and brightness makes the photo interesting..but I don't much like the harsh change from light to dark .. try a gradual change in brightness |
