Can you control a 420EX(Slave) flash with the 550EX or do you need the ST-E2 controller?

yes, you can fire the 420 with the 550. I have them both, but must confess that I don't really know how to use them in tandem to their full potential. The manuals are quite confusing, IMO.

So the 550Ex can trigger the 420Ex for sure?

Yes, set the 420 to slave and the 550 to master

Yes, definitely works, and works very well indeed, as you get full e-ttl.

The difference if you have an ST-E2, great unit, is that you can then have BOTH flash units off camera. With just the 550/420 you need the 550 to remain on the camera. I found that a pain, as if anything I would have preferred the 420 on and the 550 off, but it doesn't work that way around.

If you can afford it, I would strongly reccommend the ST-E2 sometime, it adds a HEAP more possibilities :)

i plan on getting a second 550ex, and the st-e2. i figure this is more worthwhile combination than the smaller 420ex & 550ex combo.

I actually have the 580/420 combo. The 420 is a nice unit, but not in the same league as the 550 or 580.

I would definitely got the x2 550 (or even 580) if you can :)

I've read the Sigma EF-500 DG SUPER Flash can trigger the 420EX as well...has anyone tried that Combo or have a love/hate for the Sigma flash?

I have 2 550EX's and tried to fool around with using 2 flashes - with about 50% success - I think you need to get the hang of how to set them up - sometimes they both would flash - other times - only the 1 .. ..

hmmmm...

I am guessing that is to do with the placement of the flashes. They need to be aligned so they one can read the other's IR signal. Remember, you can turn the top to face the subject and the base to face the other unit (for the remote flash).

When set up correctly I get a 100% success rate. Only time I have had it not fire is if the remote has dud batteries and they take too long to charge and I fire the first one before the remote is ready.
