Does anybody else find it puzzling that so many have decided that they will not get a better shot in the nearly 3 weeks left in the challenge that they have already submitted an entry?

Am I the only one who thinks that today is the day I get my best shot ever?

If they're like me, they enter a pic, then change it to another, then another, then another, right up to the end. That way if they fall into a coma or something at least they have an entry :-)

I think sometimes it is good to upload the image just to see how it looks on other monitors or whatever, maybe that is what they are doing ?
In any case it can be replaced at any time up to the deadline.

How would one see how it looked on others monitors? I always check to see how mine look after uploading, but only from my own computer. How can others see your entry before the challenge closes?

It does make some sense that they might be making entries that are intended to be replaced - or, at least, provide for that option - as you and Robert point out. I guess I operate differently. I have never replaced an entry after submitting. Of course, there are many times that I should have! ;o

Oh how I hate submitting to a free study.
I always leave it till 5 minutes before I go to bed on deadline night and then panic because I can't remember what I've shot in the last month : )

We've had that discussion before.
Why do people submit allready the first day or the 2nd.

I have an answer, for the Oktober free study (where there was a tread like this) I submitted the 2nd day.

I was the 7th (or so) submitter (and we had still the whole month) and I KNEW that this would score at least a top 10. (I always know that about my pictures, but the seldomly do)
It placed 4th, and got a 7+
Put away my camera for the next 29 day's and took a rest :-)

So I guess there's your answer.

some of my outtakes for the last few challenges are good for a free study

I haven't submitted yet--I haven't taken any shots that meet the challenge. :O
