I have a Canon 10D which has a write speed of 1.4MB per sec. I found a Sandisk 521MB High-speed Ultra II card with a write speed of 9MB per sec for $52.95 and a Sandisk 512MG which I do not know the write speed for $42.95. Is it worth the extra $10 for the high-speed or is the regular 512 enough for my camera. If some one knows the write speed of the 512MG it would help me out. Or make a suggestion.

The write speed of a Sandisk Ultra II is somewhat limited by the speed of the 10D, but a regular SanDisk card is still a slug by comparison. For $10 difference, I'd certainly go for the Ultra II. You might also consider the 1Gb Kingston Elite Pro for $64 at Newegg.com (not much price difference for double the capacity).

If you watch teh big box stores for rebates (bestbuy, staples, circuitcity, office max and depot) you can get std 512 CF cards for $30-35 most any week. 1Gb for twice that.

The Ultra cards are on sale usually on alternate weeks. With a Rebel 300D there is no advantage to a faster card, BUT it will read faster in a card reader on a USB 2.0 link.

Normal 1.2mb write, 1.2mb read
Ultra II 9mb write, 10mb read
Ultra III 20mb write, 20mb read

When the price difference is not too much, as in your case, I'd always go for the faster card. It may be fsater than you need for your current camera but fast enough for your next camera.

For what it's worth, HERE'S a good comparison of real world CF speed.

I have two 10Ds and have used the following cards: ScanDisk, ScanDisk Ultra II, ScanDisk Extreme and Lexar Professional (80x).

The regular ScanDisk is so slow all-around, I consider it unusable for my purposes. The Ultra II, Extreme and Lexar Pro cards all appear to perform (read and write) at the same speed, at least I cannot determine any marked difference in speed when used with a 10D.

I other words, I recommend both Ultra II and Extreme. The Lexar Pro (80x) is overkill and a waste of money, since the camera does not appear to take advantage of the advertised speed boost.

What about the off loading of the card? I know for some cameras 80Xis over kill, but does that mean that they will also load faster? I don't think my camera would benefit from an 80X, even with its buffer.
