I recently met up with David Pugh (Pug-H) in Ashikaga, Japan, to go out shooting. We went to the Ashikaga Gakko (the oldest school in Japan), Bannaji Temple, and then hiked up a hill to the Orihime Shrine.

Here are a few thumbnails from the GTG. To see all of the pictures, just click on this Ashikaga GTG Pictures link. Enjoy!

Thanks, guys. I'm looking forward to going out with both of you too as soon as we can. David is a bit busy right now, but hopefully we'll see some of his shots as well once he gets a chance.

Yes, I will eventually get around to editing and posting some... ;-)

Thanks for your comments, David. I didn't know specifically which statue that was, so I didn't want to venture a guess. And I figured that people would know that the Ashikaga Gakko building wasn't the original one - I can't even keep my t-shirts white for more than one year, so I couldn't imagine that anyone would think they could keep that building looking so white and new for 600 years. ;-) Thanks for the clarifications.

Looking forward to seeing your shots, David, whenever you get some time!

Wow, really great shots, David, with excellent focus and lots of bright color! Is your technique basically to leave your aperture at f/8 and the shutter at no more than 1/125, adjusting your ISO as necessary? I should have asked you more about that while we were together. :-)

Technique? What technique? ;-)
I think most of my shots were on the normal auto picture program. The ISO is set at 200 (the minimum for the Pentax), but it will go up automatically for lower light conditions. The thing I was deliberately doing was to watch the exposure compensation button so that in the bright sunlight I wouldn't get burnt out spots (i.e. the Exposure Bias Value is negative).
Of the school building shots, you'll note how the sky gets lighter as the camera points more in the direction of the sun. The tiled roof one was one of the few I shot in RAW, but still had problems with the light on the roof.

p.s. Your photo of the "incense gnome" was way better than mine, Phil.
