Excellent free resource, check it out:
//www.silversilicon.com/PATH.htm
This guy is great at digging up great quotes from all sorts of artists, and much of this should be essential reading for photographers starting out. I like where the author is coming from much of the time.
Ther rest of the site (www.silversilicon.com) is also well worth checking out... the links to resources on the history of photography look particularly useful. I will spend much time here checking out what else is on offer.

Do you really think we need to know about the history of photography to produce good results in the digital age? I'm not sold on that proposition.

There's a difference between learning history and to learn from history.

Can't disagree with that. But maybe I can learn something just by wallowing reprehensibly in my blissful ignorance.

Gasp... I don't mean technical history though, I mean the development of photography as an artistic medium. I think it's VITAL to be aware of as many other photographers as possible and to understand where we are stylistically in context with the past. It's not good IMO for artists to be out of touch. Also, the more influences we can draw from, the easier it is to start building your own style. It's hard to have an individual approach if you're only aware of a handful of photographers.
