Hey, I'm very new to real photography, I just recently decided to step away from good ol' family vacation photos. I've got a Canon G6, and I'm interested mostly in Black and White. What is the best way to take quality B&W's with it? Is there a way to do it merely with the camera, or do I just grayscale it in editing software. Finally, what are the rules reguarding B&W for the contests on this site?

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing everyone around the site!

your camera should have a bw setting.

Shoot colour and do some browsing for different ways to get B&Ws. First of all, ask yourself why want them in B&W. Most importantly, lean what's B&W is about.

I understand the concept of B&W, I just want to learn how to implement it into my photos.

Welcome Joe. Take a look at a recent challenge entitled "Ansel Adams". Even better, click Community > Forums > Search (above right) for all the discussion leading up to the Ansel Adams challenge. As for rules, I'm not aware of any restrictions that you should be concerned with pertaining to B/W. (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong - as if I needed to ask)!!

Here is something that might be useful to you (PDF file).
There are many other resources with different methods. Use them and be confident.
