Okay, I confess. I HATE having my picture taken...but I was playing around today with my new 50mm f/1.8, cable release, and window light. I had to completely guess and hope my focus was accurate. I had no help. Considering the subject, I thought this came out pretty good.
Any thoughts on these?
Full size 8x10 crop (a little off the right). Auto levels, auto contrast and USM. Resized to 640.
Suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
Jen

Mine allows for autofocus as well, but at f1.8 the dof is so shallow it's hard to get it right while on the opposite side of the camera. I wanted f1.8 for the shallow dof. I used other settings but I like the shallow dof.

cool photo...you might try to place the camera a little bit higher and aim down on your face...

I'm not the one that originally said it, but I was thinking the same thing. My reason would be to give your chin a more definite outline.
Looking up would stretch the neck a little (hide the slight double-chin) and changing the camera angle at the same time would keep the pose looking natural.

I think they turned out very well. You have very pretty blue eyes. Your lipstick color doesn't go with your eyes, hair, skin color at all. The color picture would be so much better with a softer, warmer shade of lipstick. |

That's what I was going to say as well as I'd go with little or no eye liner. You have very nice features and have good photography skills, you should play up ALL your assets :-) The light is very nice and I like the DOF you went with. |

...but I don't have blue lipstick! Everyone's always saying how they like the color of my lipstick. I've had this same color for several years. :-/ I have subtler colors, though. May have to switch again.

Here's a suggestion from a much older woman: ditch the dark lipstick: it looks too harsh and what the heck is that black stuff under your eyes? That looks weird..get rid of that black shadow stuff and lighten up on the lipstick, change the camera angle as the guys suggested and then post it! Your eyes are an excellent feature..make sure they are the highlight of the photo.

Unless the color of the lipstick changed in the picture (possible) I still think it's just not a good color for you. You have a very pretty delicate coloring - beautiful blue eyes, very fair skin with a warm overtone and very light brown hair with a golden/red cast. That dark magenta shade of lipstick is way too harsh, cool and dark for someone of your coloring. People who have a delicate color like you really need a more delicate shade of lipstick so it doesn't overpower their face. |
