Do they serve any purpose? Will I lose any features or functionality? Deleting them was suggested in this thread, but I wanted to make sure it was ok.

if you change the .thm to .jpg then you have a thumbnail for your picture with the same name.

the .THM is the format Canon cameras use to display a preview picture on the Camera LCD

and you can delete them all without a second thought :)

I don't know what they are so I'm assuming they're apart of the crap that gets deleted when you format cards?

DanSig is right. They're thumbnails Canon cameras use to have something to display without having to load the entire file, also to show the first frame of the videos without opening them. You can delete them once you downloaded your pictures.
