Ok - I had three choices for the Stock II challenge.
My wife liked this one:
The kids liked this one:
I entered this one:
note: borders added to first two for printing aspect ratio
Who should I listen to next time? ;^)

I'd have to agree with the kids, although the others are nice too. |

I would say the bird box...not keen on the cropping of the clothes pegs.
all nice shots though.

The kids were right. Both the other pictures are "busy" and don't really emphasize the subject, a cardinal sin in object-oriented stock photography. However, the clothespins could have been cropped (actually, "framed" is the correct word) better.
Robt.

Well, it looks like I'll have to listen to the kids more! ;^) Not only is this feedback (forum post) telling me so, I just had my FIRST DPCPrints sale this morning (WOOHOO!)...you guessed it - the 'kids' choice!

The clothespins photo certainly has the most impact, but it's mostly lighting. The birdhouse and the pinecone could both be good subjects if only the lighting was more interesting. |

You're right - the pinecone was tough to shoot, should have left it alone. At the time I liked the way the ends of the seeds on the pinecone were illuminated. Thought the interior pinecone shadows added to it. I really like the way the rules of thirds played with this one - the branches led right to the pinecone. Always fun to second guess... :P Thanks for the feedback.

Side issue...
It seems strange to me that you would add an irregularly shaped border to the image to meet a desired print aspect ratio. I've never even thought about doing that.
The border on this one is actually distracting from the image to my eye. I always crop the image to meet the print aspect ratio. That means, of course, that you will be cutting something off, but that is always going to happen anyway because cameras can only take one size at a time and full sized images in most cameras does not match any standard print size.
Sometimes I will frame an image purposely in the camera knowing I will be cutting something off for a certain print aspect later. Though I can set my camera to exactly capture 3:2 print aspect ratio I never do that. I think it is silly to throw away pixels I could be recording that could give me needed wiggle room later on for better framing.

I agree with much of what you are saying. I've been struggling some with the print aspect ratio for awhile now. In many cases now I attempt to frame the subject with additional "wiggle room" for cropping to print size. In the case of this photo I didn't and I don't see too much room for cropping to make it work correctly (maybe crop from the left - I may go back and try that).
I also think that in some cases matting can cover the extra border when framed.
It's funny, after starting this thread earlier today I found out I had sold my first print on DPCPrints. It was the one favored by the kids, the clothing pins one - it has an irregularly shaped border...go figure. ;^)
Thanks for the feedback.

I completely disagree (sorry Missed object orientated bit bear music-though I still like the other better)-. Of course I must acknowledge that this theme really has nothing to do with art.
Not being a big fan of the oversatured, over softened, too clean look I would say that the birdhouse is my favourite-I find the subject alluring due to the shadows-this doesn't mean it would score well, but hey...
