My wife was kind enought to get out in the drizzle with me and take a few quick shots. I'd love to get some feedback on them.

3 is definitely my favorite...seems very "biblical"...I think they lend themselves to some stylized color work, though....I think they have a lot of potential.

You mind if I play with one a little?

Not at all.

very nice. well composed shots, they could use some dodge and burn to add some drama.

Did you do any post-processing? I see a halo on #1 and #2 and what appears to be an uneven dodge & burn in the sky. I also think she needs more light (or if you wanted to play around with post, layer mask her and up the exposure on her).

the first two I did do a little d&b but I had to "push" to make up for the decreased exposure while we were out, additionally I'm still learning how to do a better job of d&b without making it too noticiable

Here's a quick shot at dodge/burn on #3....some will say it's overdone..but I like it...just a different style. :)

I like the way the wrap's texture is accentuated...what were your settings for the d&b?
03/27/2005 10:52:43 PM · #9
it was a lot of tweaking....but I had both the dodge and burn set at between 15 and 20 percent....some will say that's too high...but it works if you're decisive with your strokes.

And the key is to use the "highlight/midtone/shadow" setting to only work the tones you want changed.

Here's my shot at it. Layer mask on her to up the exposure, inverse selection & eclipse gradient for a smooth ligting around her. Not a huge fan of D&B because it gets slotchy real quick.

I like the increased saturation look although it maybe a bit too much for my tastes, but I did like trying to apply the mask here instead of just freehanding the d&b...might be a way for me to decrease the halo effect in the future...thanks.

I generally never use masks or curves, I may need to spend some more time playing with those...

Ah but that's the beauty of masks. If there's too much saturation, then just create another adjustment layer, tone down the saturation, and group it with her mask. Ditto with the background (meaning you can adjust saturation individually).

Takes more time intitially to draw the selection but once you're done, adjustments are a breeze.

Thanks Dog, I definitely thing the burning in the face looks better with the conversion to black and white...I actually player around with b&w but never really got anything I really liked. btw my wife didn't like any of the pictures...I think though she was trying to compare them to the models I've shot and I tried to explaine to her I was looking for something totally different from the headshots I did for the models...to no avail.

I like 4 the best b/c it looks more candid to me than 3. I would have liked 2 better if she were looking away from the camera. Just my opinions.
