I got my hands on a 540EZ speedlite. Great, but it does not work with my D60 in TTL mode, only manual.
Given that this is my first experience with a fairly intelligent flash, can anyone elaborate on what am I losing by using 540EZ? (and not having A-TTL more available to me) I plan on using it primarily as a learning tool, and if I'm happy, I may go for the EX series.

Any comments?

I wish I could help you.. truth be told, I don't understand *any* of this TTL stuff.. I've had it explained to me 30 times, and I'm still *whhaaa*?!

So, basically, I put the flash on the camera, and then pray. lol

Is this flash compatable with the D60? maybe check the instruction manual and see. most dedicated guns just slip on turn on and go.

Take a look at this page:

//photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#ttl

According to this FAQ the D60 supports E-TTL, but not TTL or A-TTL, which the 540EZ uses. SO I believe you may be stuck in manual mode with this flash. The FAQ is not from Canon, but I have not seen any erroneous information in it yet. Still, maybe you can confirm this info through Canon to be 100% sure this is correct.

You are right - D60 is not compatible with 540EZ. When I put it on my IX (film) it works OK, and with D60 I am stuck with Manual.

As I find no problems shooting in manual mode with D60 itself, I don't see it as a problem.

What is the mode that all of y'all use with flash - typically? (A)-TTL or manual?

thanks,

I usually use E-TTL indoors or with stationary subjects and use the flash compensation to bump it up or down as needed. However I have been trying to shoot in Manual mode lately when shooting birds because they react so quickly to the E-TTL pre-flash:

That is how quickly these birds move between the pre-flash and the actual flash. It makes for some neat effects but is usually not what I am going for, so I am trying to get more experience using manual mode instead.

My next purchase will either be a 70-300 or a Sigma 500 flash...I have been using a Quantarray flash. It has a manual setting (full power) or 2 'auto' modes where it reads the light and adjusts. Acts like power settings to me...

What seems to work is this: set teh camera to manual, shutter to 1/200 (or slower - slower will allow more ambient light to effect the photo) and set the aperture at 5.6 to 6.3 for most indoor normal room size and distance shots. My flash has a manaully adjustable zoom head, and moving this wil make a difference as the subjet gets farther away and you zoom in (i use a 28-80 lens).

These Photos were taken last saturday using this method. I checked the histogram after EVERY shot so make sure i got the results i was after.

e-ttl is supposed to make all this idiot proof, BUT from what i have read you still have to use your brain as different camera modes and different flash modes all interact, and the camera can switch from fill to main flash depending on overall lighting in the room...

The Sigma EF500DG comes in 2 models (ST and Super) and you can also use a Canon 420EX, 500EX and 580EX, as well as some Metz and Quantum flashes (and i suppose others). Lots of folks like the 420, but i want a modeling light and wireless capability, and the Sigma Super has that for $100 less than the 550EX. The Quantums are very nice, but not cheap.

I've been using it for, oh, about 8 months now. Haven't noticed anything bad with it.

(I think that I have 1.0.4, you said 'new' but it has really been around for some time now, right? I'll check when I get home.)

The most noticeable improvement: startup time. They also fixed some file system issues. I had only one file system problem which was caused by me, not my D60.

I've owned a D60 and a 540EZ (the latter I got rid of after owning for about a day due to it being too loud). I tried out the flash on my 300D which I believe ran fully automatic.
