I will be going to Australia in August, and I'm looking for a nice compact camera to take along. I love my S5100, but it's just the slightest bit too bulky to be carrying around in my pocket. I'm hoping for one with 5+ mp and under $400, and some manual controls and AF illuminator would be nice. This would only be the second digital camera for me, so I don't really know what brands are nice or not. Thanks alot! |

Sony has a nice 7mp camera I think for about 499.00 It is a little higher than you said..but a nice camera and it is slim enough to fit in a shirt pocket.

My son has the Sony DSC T-1 very small and great photos, no tri-pod hole.

you might get slightly noisier images from that sony though...if you aren't going to print big i would like for around 4-5 mp and pay a little more for extra functions. |

I recently bought myself a Canon A85. It's a 4MP camera, full manual controls, uses compact flash (so I can use the same stuff as my D70), uses regular AA batteries (with good battery life), fits great in my pocket and doesn't do a bad job of taking pictures. They are also pretty cheap - a good value. I'd recommend it any day - as a starter digital or as a pocket backup. |

Thanks, I checked out that Canon, and it seems very nice. While searching for that, I came across their ELPH series. Anyone know anything about those?

Costco has the Canon S500 5.0MP (elph) for $279.99 After Rebate right now, pretty nice little pocket cam.
ED: The S500 is the same guts that the Powershot S50 had in it but in a smaller footprint. The S50 was my first Digicam and I loved the daylights out of it, the results of that cam is what got me into this crazy hobby. Colors and Sharpness were just amazing out of that cam.

I really like the looks of the S500... choosing is so hard, geez. I really like the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W7 too! |

For around $400, it looks like it might be tough to beat the Olympus C-7000, 7mp + 5x optical zoom. Another plus for you is that it also uses xd-cards.

I bougth my wife this camera. I take it along on trips even when carrying my D70. Takes very nice pics, very samll, 4MP and has a 3x optical zoom. There are two models out now above it in the class for Canon so it can be found well uneder $400 and maybe even under $300.
Edit: Whoops, forgot the link
Canon SD 300
