I hadn't even really noticed the choice of Paramters on my camera until recently. Has anyone veered awy from the pre-set parameters and set their own? If anyone knows anything about this, I would love to learn more as I am lost as to what to do. I have always been shooting on the preset "Parameter 1" and am wondering if it would be useful to make my own.
Thanks for your help.

On my 20D I had to make a custom parameter set for using my Tamron 28-75 with sharpness and saturation reduced to one notch below the default midpoint. All my shots were looking over-saturated and over-sharpenned when using Parameter 1 or 2. And I used the high contrast setting when shooting in B&W for the Ansel Adams challenge. I think the custom parameters is a feature that works well.

Dunno, haven't played with that one yet. Manual says nothing about it.

It may be different with the dSLR, but in general shooting digital in BW mode is not a good idea, because it uses fewer bits of information, and it compresses the tonal range, especially in the bright areas. RAW is especially useful for pics that are planned for BW conversion, because it gives you potentially MUCH more detail in the brightest areas by virtue of its 16-bit information space. This is my experience, anyway.

I didn't have great luck with the prosumers and b/w but the 20D is another story...with the 20D (maybe others) you can set a lot of the aspects of the b/w. Obviously Contrast and Sharpness, but you can also set Filter and Tonal range...For Filters you can set None, Yellow, Red, Orange and Green and then add a Tonal Range of None, Sepia, Blue, Purple or Green. Different combinations can create some dramatic effects on the 20D. I like playing with those but always think what if I capture something really cool in b/w that would have been far better in color...I tend to stay color unless a challenge or contest is specifically b/w.
As far as Parms as mention in the OP, I found I had to create custom parms for some of the lower end lens that I had...kick up the sharpness (won't do anything for drawing more detail out of the pic but I felt better).

I think converting a file from color to B&W degrades it, after all you are giving away information. Regardless, I don't think you can make a generalization like saying that you get better B&W results by converting as opposed to shooting. There are just way, way too many variables involved. My Minolta A1 had filters for it's B&W mode.
I suppose I'm in the minority on this too, wouldn't be the first time, but I really don't care for B&W. The analogy I use to explain it is music reproduction-- once you have listened to stereo mono just doesn't sound right anymore. B&W has it's niche, but it's used too much here at dpc.
