Psychologists, psychiatrists and other mental health care professionals will ultimately have to sort this out, but when photographers get together as a group they engage in very strange ritualistic group behaviors...
First, after carefully making plans to gather as a group to take pictures they immediately separate in all four directions to take pictures off by themselves.
Often, they may not see or communicate with others in the group for hours at a time.
Later, at some predesignated time and place, they gather once again like migratory birds at their nesting grounds. The gathering places usually have plenty of cheap food and drink; often alchoholic beverages are present in abundance.
Then they play a game called "Oh, Wow!". Everyone in the group plays. In it each person races through their memory cards looking for pictures on tiny LCD camera screens to brag abou...; Uhhh, I mean share with the group. When they find something particularly good they say, "Oh, Wow... look at this one!". At this time the camera is circulated through the group so everyone gets a chance to see the image.
A well know danger of this game is that when a jealous member of the group sees a particularly spectacular image by another photographer they "accidentally" drop the camera and break it. Wealthy photographers that can afford new equipment view this as a badge of honor. Others have a different opinion.
After the game they all go home, sometimes with each other (That, of course, is another issue altogether). When leaving each photographer will be thinking one of two things that defines their particular segment of the group; either:
1-My pictures are 10 times better than everyone else's, or
2-Everyone else's pictures are 10 times better than mine.
I'm just glad I'm so good that I am part of that first segment. The ones in segment two ultimately become psycologically unstable and commit suicide.
Now tell me, is it just me or is that how all photography gatherings work? Is this an international phenomena or only local to the USA? Should we require weapons checks on future photography GTGs to avoid mass murders committed by disgruntled members of segment two?
These are serious questions. What is your experience? What is your opinion?

Well, i missed the St Pats' GTG here in Pgh, they had beer there from what i have heard.
Hmm..food yes, beer no. We seem to stick together pretty well, lots of BSing and shooting hte breeze about various subjects, some even of a photographic nature.
We don't campare LCD shots (as dentman has observed "The all look good on the LCD")
We post them here in DPC afterwards, and yes, there are the 2 groups - that we most certainly have in common.

Yep, that's how they work!
A minor technical correction though. The game of "Oh Wow!" is usually referred to by the name given it in the APA's DSM III, "chimping". It's so named because the sounds uttered by the enraptured photogs resemble chimps... "oooh, oooh, oooh!"
BTW, I'm glad I'm a member of the first group as well ;-)

I've never been on a gtg, but I much prefer shooting alone so I can't imagine I would...I'd rather know people in real life, first...

Great post. I think the researchers will already be tied up for years just trying to figure out the socio/pschodynamics of DPC! Group Photog Pschoanalysis will have to wait its turn! And in case anyone in Sacramento is listening and planning our first GTG, I will bring the Merlot! lol

what a RIOT!
here's a couple more groups:
1) damn, everyone here has more gear than me
2) damn, how come they get better pictures when i have more gear
i have had an absolute blast, not to mention have learned something new, every time i've had an opportunity to get up with other dpc'ers (even without alcohol).
not to mention, having the opportunity to do things i probably wouldn't have done otherwise, like
* letting rich terrel talk me into going up in a helicopter
* following jon lucas over the seawall to the edge of the river thames
* explaing to the police officers at 30th station that robt mann and i weren't engaged in terrorist activities, we were just there to take pictures
* producing an outtake for a challenge nearly identical to a ribbon-winner
yep, there's nothing like a little human interaction to put a face on our digital realities... |

Gringo ponders on what kind of shots a photographer would take in a place like Sacramento.
AAAaaahhh Then the light goes on!
That̢۪s why you bring the merlot!
I̢۪ll have a couple shots... in fact, I'll have a couple bottles!
We don't need no stink'in camera to get shots in Sacramento

funny post! :D What a riot and it sounds like such fun!
I wish I could add something but the only GTG here was during an ice storm and we were under a Level 3 for driving conditions in our area. Level 3 = stay off the roads unless it's an emergency. :( |

Actually, you need lots and lots of shots of very strong and smooth tequila - to help you forget that you are in Saramento!!!! Seriously, I despise this place and have yet to get a decent picture here!! (Now all the other Sacramentans will throw tomatoes at me!!!! Sorry!!)

Oh c'mon. At least you have a zoo. There's the Capitol building, Old Town Sac, the Towe Ford Museum, and about 10 wildlife preserves with 60 minute drives (gray lodge, sac wildlife refuge, woodbridge reserve, etc.) |

Gringo pats Kylie on the back and tries to stop the smoke from spewing out her ears.
I knew my comment would set her off. ;)
I’ve never been on a GTG yet either, but there are quite a lot of DPCr’s here in my area. I’m looking forward to meeting them. I’ve never really done any shooting with anyone other than my wifeâ€Â¦ and she usually has me find her in the shoe store when I’m done. She doesn’t really hang around much when I’m shooting.
I wonder if I̢۪m one of those people who make some crazy facial expressions or something when I̢۪m concentrating. Maybe that̢۪s why people don̢۪t want to hang around that crazy looking man with the camera.
Does anybody else make those crazed expressionsâ€Â¦.. Maybe you do it and you aren’t aware of it yet. Hmmmmmmmm. |

Hmm, whenever I go on a DPC meet/GTG, it's totally unlike that. Sure we may get separated for a bit as we find interesting subject matter along our "path" but we usually stay together and wander around as a unit. We do share our photos with each other on the spot or at a restaurant or whatnot. I have never seen someone, out of jealousy, drop a camera. I feel that we should have the utmost respect for other photographers and their equipment. Maybe I go to the wrong types of meets or our group is just dysfunctional, not sure. :)

OK, I will chant and meditate now that Gringo has returned to offer comfort . . . lol. I guess I should apologize to anyone offended by my outbursts on DPC when I get on my anti-Sacramento rants. It is a very personal thing with my husband and I, and we really do have a rabid hatred of the place. We have obligations here right now, so cannot move at this time, but we will. I acknowledge how tainted my vision is of this place, and do apologize.
And, yes, Gringo, I know how peculiar I look when I am absorbed behind the camera. That is why my husband walks off and makes sure know thinks he's with me!!
Edit for typos

Ah, yes... "chimping". I stand corrected!
I believe that term was first coined in a paper in "Psychology Today" on primitive mammalian behavior patterns. It was considered solid proof that lower human life forms evolved directly from monkeys.
I'm switching over to the "Ashley in Studio" posting now...

Ha ha haaaaaa, that's too funny!
At the first two London GTGs the groups were small enough that we stayed together and although lots of pics were taken a lot of time was just spent chatting too. We would separate only by a few feet or so at crowded places like Covent Garden where each of us would find things of interest to us - people, architecture, texture details etc.
The third (recent) GTG was just so big that, after the main lunch, we separated into two groups according to interest. At the main lunch one of the themes seemed to be to take the most pictures of fellow DPCers and the gauntlet was thrown down to make that into a challenge for the day...
I think most people took so many pictures that we didn't go through that crazy period where everyone thumbs through their thumbs showing their best pics but we did it online as soon as we got home!
LOL!
